Residents of Colorado town baffled after entire police force suddenly quits
WaPo ^ | 4/24/16 | Peter Holley

If you find yourself in an emergency situation in Green Mountain Falls, Colo., don’t bother calling police.

In this scenic western hamlet, they no longer exist.

All four members of the 700-person town’s police force — Tim Bradley, the police chief, and three volunteer reserve officers — resigned April 14 because of an alleged policy dispute with the municipality’s newly elected mayor, according to Fox affiliate KXRM-TV.

Residents told the station that they weren’t exactly sure why the resignations occurred.

“Our marshal and three deputies quit, and that’s about all they said,” Ann Pinell said. “We’ve had our hometown marshal for many, many years, so I sure hope we get another marshal in our town.”

A reporter from KXRM-TV who visited police headquarters was unable to get inside the building, which was empty and had the lights turned off. A town meeting summary hanging in the local post office states that Bradley’s resignation had been accepted, but it provides no other details, the station reported.

Shalom Nachum!

Gotta love how when government employees of almost any kind are fired or quit they have benefits, are placed on “paid leave,” kaap generous packages, have multi-year severance options etc.

Whereas when the rest of us get terminated... We can’t eat.

Hope they’re proactive in the town. Arm themselves. Police are minutes away when seconds count!

Right there is your answer! The police chief is a dog lover.

Yes, really. Do you know what a savings or retirement account is for? If you work for yourself, you better plan ahead for those times when things get tough. No one owes you a permanent job or will promise you that your business will always make a profit. If you beleive that, you are a democrat.

In a town of only 700 and nobody knows why they quit. BS.

At least this reporter got it right: a town has a Marshall, a county has a Sheriff. It seems in every TV show and movie set in a small town there's a Town Sheriff. It's one of the details the entertainment industry seems to always get wrong. But, then, that's expected since all us little guys live in "fly over country" -- which is anywhere the "elite" don't go -- and getting details purposefully or sloppily wrong is another way to show we're unimportant.

And this moralizing has what to do with the price of tea in China?

Is there some reason you are evading the real point, which is that government workers generally have it a lot cushier than Joe Blow, that the salary numbers they talk about as meager are actually only a small portion of their picture?

In another article on this, it states that the sheriff actually quit last November and that the town’s bylaws state that there must be a sheriff in place. Since there has been no sheriff since November, the rest of the officers were forced to quit.

I’m amazed this is national news. If you go and ask the seven hundred residents of the town....I’m pretty sure that 500 of them know the reason.

About a decade ago from the town in Alabama where I grew up...the one and only cop (referred to as a ‘chief’ as well) had drafted up and ran some auxillary deputy force (six individuals) who were running weekend road-blocks and harassing both town residents and those coming into the town for gas or groceries. This is a town of about 500 individuals.

For roughly three years, people tried talking to the town council and mayor....none were willing to listen to the complaints....so when the election came....the residents voted out most of the city council members and the mayor. New crew came in, and they ordered the auxiliary force to be disbanded....with the police chief getting all furious at the meeting. So they kinda hinted to him....he had 30 days to find work elsewhere and leave. That’s exactly what he did. He moved four counties over and continued the same sub-standard cop methods and harassment.

The new cop hired for the small Ala town? It was laid out in blunt language...no auxiliary people and no road-blocks.

The journalism in this case for Colorado? It’s marginal stuff that you’d expect out of a 12-year-old kid.

That dog attack article has nothing to do with Colorado, happened in Texas. I guess the WaPo wanted to muddy the waters.

Nobody is asking the obvious question: what did the new mayor do to make the police force all resign?

Thank you for your ventilating and hypothesizing...but since the article is on FR...I wouldn’t mind it if someone, perhaps from the area could answer the question of why they quit.

This is obama’s america and they aren’t far from the border, so were they perhaps given orders they didnt want to deal with...let me know
