Why is Africa so poor while Europe and North America are so wealthy?
The Washington Post ^ | April 24, 2016 | Andrew Gelman

A few years ago, two economics professors, Quamrul Ashraf and Oded Galor, published a paper, “The Out of Africa Hypothesis, Human Genetic Diversity, and Comparative Economic Development,” that drew inferences about poverty and genetics based on a statistical pattern.

The world’s most genetically diverse countries (using their measure of what counts as genetically diverse) are in sub-Saharan Africa, which is the world’s poorest region. The least genetically diverse countries are in places like Bolivia, which have low incomes but not as low as in that region of Africa. There’s an intermediate level of genetic diversity among the residents of the middle-income and rich countries in Asia, Europe and North America.

Genetic diversity arises from migratory distance of populations from East Africa. Countries in east Africa have the highest genetic diversity because this is where humans evolved. Populations that settled in other parts of the world descend from various subgroups of people who left Africa at different times. Thus, these groups are less varied in their genetic profiles.

Ashraf and Galor put this together and argued that this is “reflecting the trade-off between the beneficial and the detrimental effects of diversity on productivity.” Their argument was that a little bit of genetic diversity is a good thing because “a wider spectrum of traits is more likely to be complementary to the development and successful implementation of advanced technological paradigms,” but if a country is too genetically diverse, its economy will suffer from “reduced cooperation and efficiency.” Thus, they wrote, “the high degree of diversity among African populations and the low degree of diversity among Native American populations have been a detrimental force in the development of those regions.”

Africa’s wealth in natural resources dwarfs that of Europe and North America combined.

Having been to Africa, I blame culture not genetics. When your government is corrupt, those who want to get rich go into government instead of creating something of value. Those who like to create or produce get ripped off repeatedly until they give up. The end result is poverty, with no one producing, which is what Obama and Hillary are bringing to America with their corruption.

Secure property rights are the foundation of every advanced civilization in history.

No secure property - no civilization.

Recruit Cajuns and send them to pacify the rivers and swamp. Crocodile are a little bit more sporty to take on than alligator; but, I think they are up to it.

Grass as far as the eye can see, and no trees for lumber, nor stone evident. Rolled up in a wagon and used available material for first homestead accommodations.

I really hope people do not underestimate the significance of Christianity in all this, especially per Europe.

Some here refer to Europe as highly advanced, but they refer to recent history.

These same people might also use the term “Dark Ages”, which liberals incongruously blame on Christianity.

But dark relative to what?

To Rome?

There really was no “greatness” at all in Europe north of Rome. They were savages. Little more than what we think about Africans even now.

Rome had conquered and done things itself in those northern regions, but Europe really did not grow and advance itself until Christianity spread. “Dark” compared to Rome, but to the savages before? I think not. Now Europeans started doing marvelous things.

Culture has a HUGE influence.

Notice the other technology in those pix. Just being resourceful with what is abailable.

They are more advanced than those for which you try to play devil’s advocate.

OK, the literacy rates in DC were higher for blacks in the early 20th Century. Not the whole country.

The inner city black areas didn't exist until the 60-70s public housing projects after the end of segregation. Thus your reference couldn't possibly be true.

Huh? Ever hear of Harlem? Anacostia or the U Street Corridor in DC? Pre-1954 the top academic public schools in DC & Baltimore were black. Read the school choice lit.

And where is Christianity dying? And where is it growing?

Damn shame they didn't pick that African for Pope. He's not a communist.

Your posts are as nonsensical as those you champion

An insult, not an argument. With possible racial overtones. Wonder who you are voting for????

ust like Europe, South Africa, which despite it’s troubles is still head and shoulders above any other African country, is having problems with refugees coming in from the rest of the continent.

In South Africa, you have the two white tribes, the Afrikaners and the Anglos who civilized the country (and to a smaller extent, the Indians)

There was this show in India about how they do this slop work and never improve the thing over generations. Feces and animal skins in holes in the walls. No ‘spark’ to say ‘screw this’ and go another way.

It’s so complicated. Cause many Indians are absolutely capable of being fully genius. So it’s this mix of spark/race/genetics/culture.

In our engineering department HRM would occasionally hire these Indian PhD types. My boss called them “1000 horsepower without a driveshaft”

Yep, Hinduism and the culture holds back so much. They have to get out of it very early to have a full brain utilization.

Oh I have heard that one too many times to count. Liberals love to blame everything on Europeans and their descendants. Odd to me that liberals that believe such things so strongly would choose to live in Europe or the United States when they should be much happier elsewhere.

In Africa their own tribal warfare is what made the slave trade possible. Though I guess if you look at the options they had back then if another tribe defeated yours in battle you would either be murdered or captured for slavery. Impossible to calculate how many lives were saved by slavery. Tell that to a liberal ranting about colonialism. I have, it is fun.

I am not arguing for slavery, that is just the truth of what happened.

Illegal immigration is indeed a form of modern slavery, yet liberals are the ones that support it. No way to understand the liberal mind.

I considered that.
Egyptian civilization were gone before printing was invented, but their written language limited them to a small literate class. They did seem to have overcome tribalism.
But then they got run over by the Moslems.
