Go ahead, Donald, get 1,237; it won't matter: RNC delegate
CNBC ^ | April 22, 2016 | Lori Ann LaRocco

Donald Trump may be the only Republican presidential candidate who can realistically hit the magic 1,237 number for the majority of delegates, but according to a senior Republican National Committee official that does not mean he will become the GOP presidential nominee.

Curly Haugland, a longstanding RNC official and an unbound delegate from North Dakota who will be on the convention rules committee in July, told CNBC that attaining 1,237 during the primaries does not secure the nomination.

"Even if Trump reaches the magic number of 1,237 the media and RNC are touting, that does not mean Trump is automatically the nominee," Haugland said. "The votes earned during the primary process are only estimates and are not legal convention votes. The only official votes to nominate a candidate are those that are cast from the convention floor."

the end of the Republican Party as we know it

The primaries that have brought a Liberal Democrat (of the older Harry Truman, Sam Nunn, sort) to the cusp of being the Republican nominee has already accomplished that. The only question is whether this new populist version of the party will win in November or effectively split into two and put Hillary Clinton into the White House. But the deed which starts it all is done.

that guy needs to STFU. the only thing worse than nominating trump would be to steal the nomination from him if he wins it fair and square.

let’s go to the general and see what happens. if I could pull the lever for mittens, I’m sure I can pull the lever for motormouth.

In March Republican convention rules member Curly Haugland told CNBC that the delegates choose the GOP nominee, not the people.

On Friday Curly told CNBC that even if Donald Trump wins 1,237 delegates that does not mean he will be the Republican nominee.

Curly added: “The votes during the primary process are only estimates.”

“Surely Republicans know that this would unleash unimaginable Whoop Ass everywhere”.

The only thing Republicans know about Whoop Ass is that they enjoy the Democrats putting it on them.

Cruz supporters continue to try and move the goal posts. The funny thing is that if Trump gets over 1100 the GOP leadership will marshal enough unpledged delegates to avoid a disastrous “contested” convention. The Lord knows that they have been doing all they can to stop Trump, but Trump will have several million more votes than Cruz by the convention, the momentum is still with Trump regardless of what the two spoilers and their supporters would have us believe.

The GOPe is getting very nervous that they may not be able to lose this election as they have planned to do all along.

Regardless of what Curly said or how it may have been taken out of context, he has no major influence with the RNC.

At the Spring Convention Meeting held last week, the RNC stated emphatically that whomever first got to 1237 would be the nominee.

"I am no fan of trump but if he gets 1237 that should be it. Its his to lose in the general."

I'm with you. If Rubio won 1237, I would vote for Rubio in the main election (versus Hillary or Bernie).

I was taught to obey the rules. But the implied contract is that the rules should be known and fair. Change the contract and my obedience goes away.

There is a lot of truth to "We have to burn down the village, to save the village."

1100 delegates used to be my "worse case scenario" for Trump. I have since bumped that to 1200 in light of recent events and polling.

More likely, Trump will have 1300+.

No way would the GOP ever nominate Cruz. He has demonstrated a total lack of national appeal and he has gotten plastered in the Deep South and Northeast. He simply has zero ground game east of the Mississippi.

No ground game = defeat

Cruz also does exceedingly bad in battleground states - the states that the GOP must win if they are to get 270 EVs in the fall.

We are about to find out (in May and June) that Cruz does not do well on the West Coast either. You cannot expect to be taken seriously as a presidential candidate if you only do well from Texas north to Wisconsin (and in states where the people do not actually vote).
