His general-election appeal in question, Donald Trump's senior team is promising anxious Republicans that voters will see "a real different guy" soon after the GOP front-runner claims his party's presidential nomination.
"When he's out on the stage, when he's talking about the kinds of things he's talking about on the stump, he's projecting an image that's for that purpose," Paul Manafort, who is leading Trump's primary election strategy, told Republican National Committee members in a private briefing late Thursday. The Associated Press obtained a recording of the discussion.
"You'll start to see more depth of the person, the real person. You'll see a real different guy," Manafort said. "He gets it," Manafort said of Trump's need to moderate his brash personality. "The part that he's been playing is evolving into the part that now you've been expecting, but he wasn't ready for, because he had first to complete the first phase. The negatives will come down. The image is going to change."
The message is part of the campaign's intensifying effort to convince party leaders that Trump will help deliver big electoral gains this fall, despite his contentious ways. Yet it also opens him up to questions about his authenticity.
Republican rival Ted Cruz seized on the remarks in a radio interview late Thursday.

I look at it this way...Cruz is the same old lawyer/career politician with a globalist streak a mile wide. Maybe Trump will disappoint, maybe he won’t.
But right now America is DEAD. We have been taken over by marxists and they are importing the third world in by the tens of thousands every week. So no matter what, I will roll the dice on Trump and take the good with the bad.
If he does the top two or three things he has promised, then he can save America. He is a patriot, and has always honored the military and the vets with proof going back to the early 80’s. Nobody can argue that he is not a patriot. Ever.
If he doesn’t do these things, then we were dead anyway and Cruz or any of the others were not going to fix it any better.
Mr. Trump has this guy on the payroll?? He sounds like he's working for the DNC fer cryin' out loud.
But that's what they always do. Republicans ALWAYS swing to the left for the generals and Democrats ALWAYS swing to the right...in order to capture the center.
I don't agree with it, but since Trump's got some high-powered lobbying support now, that's how they're advising him without a doubt.
There is nothing new in this political strategy. In 1976 Ronald Reagan promised, if nominated, to name liberal Northeast Republican Senator Richard Schweiker of Pennsylvania as his running mate in a bid to attract liberals and centrists in the party.
Reagan barely lost to Gerald Ford at the convention
Taking it exactly as you wrote it, you’re saying that you cannot depend on Trump to anything he has said he will do. Really?
It is scary that you vote.
Exactly. You are so right
I’m going to take Trump at his word, and expect to be getting really tired of “winning” before this is over with.
Trump is not going to swing really far to the left. He has toned down his tweeting, is acting in a less knee jerk reaction mode and plans to give about 9 serious policy speeches on the order of AIPAC and will utilize a teleprompter. He is not going to abandon his core stances on issues.
Hey Donny, were you lying then or are you lying now???
Why?
Because I believe there is a moral imperative to beat the Hildabeast?
At this point, the time for choosing in the GOP is over with. There is a presumptive nominee. There isn't anything that any of us can do about it now.
For me to talk about my personal opinions on the nominee or about any of the people that he defeated is counter-productive at this point, so I won't waste the bandwidth doing so.
The bottom line is that we have to play the cards we're dealt. Unless we're willing to keep bickering...which will reseult in the Hildabeast getting the keys to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW.
So, you agree with the conclusion I drew about your statement, but you still think you want to vote for Trump?
Wow.
I guess that means he will have to finally read his position papers so he will know what he believes.
Personally, I like Trump's tone, but then I am Trump zombie. Or am I a Trumpbot; or am I a cult member? I'm so confused. ;(
You have to understand, this is nothing to do with policy, but persona.
He is an honest man and has his published policies so far plus what he says. He is not going to change from what he calls common sense conservative. What they are talking about is public perception, the public persona that some people find distasteful because he’s been loud and brash to get the message out and cut through the clutter and get the hard cores who were not afraid and could see him for what he was right away, and got them on board the Trump Train.
Now he will work towards getting the rest of the people, the ones who perhaps followed others, the ones who are unsure or ill-informed, the ones who are afraid to take a chance, or afraid of change, etc. Trump will still be Trump, but he will show these others that there is more to him that what has been seen so far.
I didn't vote for Willard in 2012. I voted against Obungo. Same thing in 2016.
The only hope I see for Trump is you MIGHT shame him into giving you a fence, but the rest of it is right out of Hilliary's playbook. You know he voted for her as Senator. He voted for Schumer. He gave money to Bill and Hillary. They are friends.
I can't understand the blindness on purpose here. At least Cruz is a conservative that tells the truth. You will get your fence, your tax cuts, and he will defend the USA from enemies, foreign and domestic. Just vote for a real conservative,...Cruz.
It's too late for that, or can't you see that?
Trump is the nominee. Like it or not, we all have to hold our noses or there will definitely be a Clinton and her girlfriend back in the White House.
Even “Sybil” only had 16 personalities. How many is Trump up to now?
