Bolstering his status as China's most powerful leader in decades, Chinese President Xi Jinping has assumed a more direct role as head of the country's powerful armed forces with the new title of commander in chief of its Joint Operations Command Center, state media and analysts said Thursday.
Xi's new position was revealed in news reports that featured prominently on national news broadcasts Wednesday and Thursday in which he appeared publicly for the first time in camouflage battle dress wearing the joint center's insignia.

Kind of surprising he was not before this.

The days of one man rule in China are long gone. He’s most likely a figurehead. The biggest problem with having a strong military in a place like China is having a strong military in a place like China.

I heard a report about this on the John Batchelor Show a few nights ago. Xi is a Maoist and wants to re-assert the Communist Party’s power over the military. He is especially fearful of the power of the generals who have accumulated wealth by running businesses. He might believe, quite rightly, that the wealth and military power of these generals would eventually challenge the authority of the party.
He also wants to remove those military leaders who might balk at orders to use military force to expand Chinese power.
This is something to watch carefully.
He needs to have control of the military when the people finally rise up to overthrow it’s government...
He’s more adventurous and dangerous than Mao. And we have no leader who is willing to stand up to Red Chinese espionage and aggression.
That is why Obama chose several Maoists as his advisors - Anita Dunn and Vann Jones, among others.
