Harriet Tubman to appear on $20 bill (in 2030)

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will make an announcement today about several changes to U.S. currency. Contrary to a suggestion last year, Alexander Hamilton will apparently be staying on the $10 bill but women’s rights leaders will be added to the back of the bill. The big change will be to the $20 bill according to Politico:

Treasury will also announce that it plans to replace former President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill with Harriet Tubman, the sources said. There will also be changes to the $5 bill to depict civil rights era leaders. The Treasury Department announced last June that a woman would replace Hamilton on the $10 bill, though at the time Treasury was said to be seeking input about which woman would appear on the bill.

The suggestion to replace Hamilton met with backlash from people who a) thought Hamilton as the first Treasury Secretary should remain on the nation’s money, b) people who thought Andrew Jackson should be removed from the $20 instead, and c) people who worried a woman would wind up sharing space with Hamilton on the $10 instead of getting a bill of her own. It appears Treasury heard the critics.

CNN reports the changes to the $20 bill will take some time:

“The soonest that a new $20 note will be issued is 2030,” the source said, citing a lengthy process convened by the Advanced Counterfeit Deterrence steering committee, which includes representatives from the U.S. Secret Service, the Treasury, and the Federal Reserve.

That process isn’t likely to be sped up by the Federal Reserve, which issues the currency, given the work that goes into designing secure technology to thwart counterfeiters.

The new $10 bill is scheduled to be released in 2020.

Read up on Old Hickory why don’t you. He fought in the Revolution as a teen and nearly starved and beaten to death. Served in War of 1812 and Indian wars. Fought centralized banking and paid off all of our debt. Tubman doesn’t hold a candle to him.

I’m no Jackson admirer per se, but I hate seeing “Olk Hickory” getting the shaft. He is the only president who ever stood up to the Supreme Court. All the others cowered to the judges.

You’re right: it’s the Trail of Tears that ruined Jackson’s reputation, which otherwise was sound.

They could have used Angela Davis; that would have thrilled tens of millions of “Americans”.

This might merit a separate thread but what the hey, it’s easy to throw rocks. My point is who, as Freepers, would we propose in place of the selection made?

My first two are Eleanor Roosevelt (for obvious reasons) or Dolly Madison. After all, Dolly saved our most sacred document from the Brits herself as First Lady!!!

I was merely quoting another perspective. I am resistant to change.

Not FDR. He bullied the SCOTUS, and they caved. Big time.

>>> the treasury of the us produces money for exchange of commerce. fed produces currency stuff that enables debt to sustain current.

She was a celebrated part of our nations slave period. Now to be once again celebrated since our post-racism president has reopened old wounds and is pouring salt into them to recreate a race schism in America. A schism we have worked tirelessly to heal and were being very successful at but that was not useful to purveyors of socialism. The difference between the haves and have nots needs to be wide for socialism to take root.

All those $20’s will reside next to all those Susan B. Anthony coins; there will be a rush on fives, tens and fifties. Some fast food place/cop in some backwater town who’ve not heard will arresting folks for counterfeit money. It even looks fake.
