Republicans to call for monarchy referendum when Queen dies

Britain’s republican movement has revealed it plans to mount a campaign for a referendum on the future of the monarchy when the Queen dies.

Republic has been nervous of appearing callous over the Queen’s mortality, because it sees the popularity of the Queen as crucial to public support for the institution.

But on the eve of the Queen’s 90th birthday, Republic’s chief executive, Graham Smith, suggested that, when it happens, the Queen’s death will mark a turning point in public attitudes.

“The Queen’s birthday reminds us that support for the monarchy is bound up with support for the Queen,” he said.

In a statement to mark the royal birthday, he added: “In a hereditary monarchy the Queen’s age becomes a political issue. Long before the Queen dies the country will need to debate what happens next.”

I wouldn’t be amused either if they insisted on mounting a 5.56mm rifle in that gawdawful machine before letting me fire it.

I believe that Charles has been pushed to the side in favor of William, at least unofficially.

I don’t know. A 90-year-old lady shooting ANYTHING is kind of respectable to me.

If I were British and saw the low rent soap opera that will be take over Windsor Castle after she dies, I’d probably vote for the republic.

Typical Guardian.

There is absolutely no significant call for a republic. In fact they monarchy is more popular now than it has been for years.

The Republic Movement will have to hope that the vast majority of ‘Monarchists’ are actually just ‘ Elizabethists. I have severe doubts about that.

Charles will certainly be king if he outlives his mother. Those who suggest that he will be pushed to one side don’t, with respect, understand the system.

I suspect some perfidy is behind this “republican” action. Many of the leaders in the EU openly despise the constitutional monarchs and other nobility, as being “in the way” to *their* becoming a de facto “neo-nobility”, in a decidedly undemocratic future Europe.

They also see the British crown as a rallying point for Euroskeptics, who want to preserve British sovereignty, integrity, and identity.

The EU so despises Britain, and England in particular, that in past they have considered bisecting England from North to South, putting one half in one European bloc, and the other in a different bloc.

They loathe its Common Law based legal system, and want to replace it with the much less egalitarian French Civil Code, itself based on the Code Napoleon, which descends from Roman Law.

In any event, hopefully her majesty will dignify the crown from her deathbed, by sending stranglers around to visit Charles, to insure the crown passes seamlessly to William.

The concept of an inheritable throne is ridiculous. It has served its purpose and needs to be laid to rest. The “royal family” needs to be turned into ordinary citizens immediately, and the UK needs to stop paying them because of whose child they are.

Since they are incapable of working at a job like normal people, they should receive a pension equivalent to what a typical senior citizen gets from Social Security, or $1700 a month.

If the Queen doesn’t soon deal with the `Charles problem’, Britain will have its first Muslim monarch.

It’s a good idea.

And she looks like she thinks she could do better.

And don’t the Republicans have their hands full here at home?

Why dabble in politics in Ole Blighty?

What could Rancid Pubies and RNC possibly contribute to that mess?

Oh?

never mind.

UP THE IRONS!

Jedi.

Why worry! It will probably jam anyway! Remember when Great Britain originally wanted a .17 cal military firearm to replace the FAL, but adopted the .223 instead?

The Queen is a tough old biddy. Don’t think they have anyone of her caliber to take her place.
