Plumes of smoke rose some 100 meters into the sky, according to local media and videos captured by witnesses. The eruption of Mt. Aso, located in southern Japan, was recorded at around 11:30pm GMT Friday.

Since small eruptions had been recorded at Mt. Aso even before the series of deadly quakes hit the area on Thursday and Friday, the Japanese Meteorological Agency has reportedly decided to keep the alert level at 2 on a scale of 1-5.

No wonder stuff like Godzilla is so embedded in their folklore.

We are Godzilla.

A terrible force that came from the sea and destroyed Japanese cities.

It helped them cope psychologically with what happened.

Then as we rebuilt Japan, Godzilla became something of a protector, and with Baby Godzilla, even a friendly presence.

We are Godzilla.

I always wondered why Godzilla reminded me of Curtis LeMay. :)

Technically, “Godzilla” is French. He (It?) is an unintended result of French nuclear testing in the Pacific.

I met a guy that said he and friends were driving back to Washington State from camping in Idaho when they ran into the Mt. St. Helen's ash fall.

They had to spend a couple of days in a HS gym in some town.

The car was a mess, espcially the interior.

Then there's the potential health problems from pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis to consider, too.

In fact, that’s what exactly happened after Pinatubo erupted in 1991—it caused enough cooling that California ended up with three winters of above-normal rainfall because the cooler atmosphere drove the winter southward movement of the winter jet stream further south than normal for the Pacific.

I read in the USGS article that the Kyushu, Japan earthquake (one of two major Japanese quakes) moved the fault it affected some 3.4 meters at one spot. That’s a big move in the fault. However, Mount Aso was already in the process of eruption. It’s hard to make the equation other than to say “a lot is happening without more than coincidental connection”. Keep tuned.

Yes. Two of the larger aftershocks were on the north-east rim of the caldera, opposite Kumamoto.

You can see the rim of the caldera in the photo at the top of this post. It’s the green band towards the top of the picture.

That’s a nice story, only I know for a fact that the Japanese had Godzilla movies in the can pre-war.

Of course they don’t exist anymore because the main film industry storage vaults were in Nagasaki. DOH!
