STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: From LGBT+ Against Islamophobia in response to Prevent and Trevor Phillips

We believe the struggle for LGBT+ rights is an essential part of a wider struggle for an equal society, free of all prejudice and discrimination.
It is precisely because of this that we do not accept that the cause of LGBT+ rights should be used to divide the victims of prejudice and inequality against one another.
Specifically we are absolutely opposed to the use of LGBT+ rights to justify Islamophobia. The representation of Islam as more homophobic than any other religion is false and amounts to an excuse for racism.
We are now seeing Muslims deemed as a ‘nation within a nation’ and attitudes towards the LGBT+ community being used to justify blatant Islamophobia. We know what it is like to be treated as outsiders, to be blamed for society’s ills and to have our freedom to speak out against injustice and prejudice trampled on. In 1988 the Tories implemented “Section 28” which sought to stop schools from addressing LGBT+ relationships, accusing them of ‘promoting homosexuality’. As a result teachers lived in fear of openly challenging homophobia; school students could not openly discuss their sexuality; a climate grew that fostered a rise in bullying; young lives were ruined.
Today the Prevent strategy, identifies Muslim students as a potential threat and young Muslims in particular as “vulnerable to extremism”; teachers are encouraged to report on Muslim students for expression of political, religious or cultural belief.
This narrative is fuelling Islamophobia and hate crime against Muslims, especially Muslim women. The rhetoric of Section 28 sought to cast LGBT people as responsible for HIV/Aids. Prevent seeks to cast Muslims as ‘extremists’.
It was through unity of LGBT+ campaigners, teachers, trade unions and others that we won the repeal of Section 28, and with it a greater acceptance of the LGBT+ community. This was not granted to us by those who now seek to use LGBT+ rights to divide us. We fought for it.
LGBT+ Against Islamophobia was launched in February 2015 following a meeting with some of the original members of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners. The miners who fought the great strike of 1984/5 were also called the ‘enemy within’. We believe we must side with our Muslim brothers and sisters as we stood with the miners then.
We need to stand united. Our banner has been seen defending mosques under attack in Dudley, opposing fascists in Dover and supporting refugees in Calais. The Tory Government is in disarray, from the NHS to education, from tax avoidance rip-offs to benefit cuts. In order to force through austerity they try to use racism to divide us.
We need to stand together. We therefore now stand with our Muslim brothers and sisters in the fight against Prevent and Islamophobia. Please join our group on Facebook and get in touch, especially if you are willing to speak at meetings on behalf of LGBT+ Against Islamophobia.

The fact is, starting about 2 years ago, if you look at the actual LBGT venues, the actual gays for example in San Francisco et all, they are getting it, they DO see Islamic extremists such as ISIS as a very real threat to them and their life itself. They don’t like these type of Muslims, period. They consider them backward barbarians from the 12th Century. Yes, some gays are so leftwing, they are full pedal to the metal with the unholy alliance between the Left and Islamic Radicals which is a fact and very real. These type of gays are more about being Leftists than any sexual orientation. They just use that to promote the leftist agenda. So, don’t be misled by such loud mouth rads and their agendas. Just as there are a lot of blacks who reject Sharpton, there are a lot of gays who reject Islamic Radicals and don’t play this leftist word games about “Islamophobia” - they don’t like those type of Muslims just like anyone else, in fact, due to the agenda to kill all homosexuals they hate them even more.
