Friday from Plattsburgh, NY, Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said when his rival Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) used the term “New York values,” he did so with “hatred toward New York.”

Poisoning the well (or attempting to poison the well) is a fallacy where adverse information about a target is preemptively presented to an audience, with the intention of discrediting or ridiculing everything that the target person is about to say.
What information? You suggest that he accused the right honorable senator with sexual misconduct (which he has never done) but which would leave him open to a charge of defamation per se, which most decent people would have ...
All Trump did was give his opinion that Cruz is spiteful towards Nyou Yawk City.
Remember, Cruz was milking this regional prejudice/slur back way back in February, when he was in the heartland trying to make political hay with us rubes? Back when we began to smell a smell coming from his campaign?

Exactly correct and it was a YUGE mistake! It was never about “winning” NY, it would be about winning some delegates and keeping Trump below 50%.
It was STUPID. I remember at the time he said it (being from NY State) “why on earth did he do that?” (shoot himself in the foot, that is) Small, if any, upside, Huge potential downside. Now he is reaping the whirlwind.
Trump has no proof of this but the media will give him a pass till he meets up with Hillary.
