Moscow calls US reaction to Baltic jet flyovers "incomprehensible"

Moscow (dpa) - Russian fighter jets that made numerous low-altitude passes close to a US military destroyer in the Baltic Sea earlier this week observed all safety regulations, a Russian Defence Ministry spokesman said Thursday.

According to the Pentagon, the Russian Sukhoi Su-24 jets made "aggressive" flyovers on Monday and Tuesday in close proximity to the USS Donald Cook, with US media reporting that they flew as close as an estimated 10 metres from the ship.

A Russian military helicopter also flew a number of low-altitude circles around the ship on Tuesday, taking photographs as it flew, according to US media reports.

Russian Major General Igor Konashenkov rejected the criticism, saying the manoeuvres by the Sukhoi Su-24 jets were carried out during scheduled training flights over neutral waters in the Baltic, according to Russian state news agency TASS.

"Spotting the ship within the visibility zone, the Russian pilots turned their aircraft away from the vessel, fully observing the safety measures," TASS quoted Konashenkov as saying.

"The reason for such an aggrieved reaction from our US colleagues is, frankly speaking, incomprehensible to us," he added, according to Interfax news agency.

I know it's not popular, but I have to agree with the Russians on this.

This type of activity, and worse, has been going on in international waters for 60 years.

It's routine. They do it, we do it. And a lot worse too.

Why the big protest now?

It could not have gotten worse without them hitting the ship.

Simple--It makes Obama look bad.

No one does it this close to a ship. The Russians were testing our close approach allowance orders. Try to get this close to a Russian destroyer and you’d be fired on a couple of miles out - at least. Those planes were inside the kill zone for the ship.

If we had a real President, and a missile was fired across their bow during a pass, would they call that incomprehensible? Putin can do anything he wants with our Pussy in Chief...he knows it and he is proving it.

"It could not have gotten worse without them hitting the ship."

I've been overflown BELOW the bridge, but over the flight deck several times by Russian aircraft that were armed and radiating.

At about 500knots.

That'll wake you up, as will an unfused torpedo hitting you broadside.

Or, running up so close alongside you trade paint.

Jet? 10 meters?

10 Meters is not “normal” and within safety precautions for a jet.

"he knows it and he is proving it"

And they proved it with every US President since Eisenhower.

Were they all pussies too?

Uh, no. It was SOP during the cold war. We never shot down a Ivan doing a buzz job, and they never shot down one of ours. An inch is as good as a mile when it comes to a close pass.

This is nothing but our touchy feelie military leadership (including the CIC) whining cause someone kicked sand in their eyes.

My Brother-in-Law was a naval aviator. He flew Neptunes during the Cuban missile crisis. I can remember him telling how low they flew over Russian ships but that was a totally different scenario.

I will email him and see if he has seen anything like that. They are on Eastern time so probably already gone to bed.

I doubt we have any orders allowing us to fire on anything, that is why the USS Cole was hit by terrorists.
