John Kasich links Jesus’ blood to Passover at matzah bakery
The Times of Israel ^ | 4/14/15 | Uriel Heilman

JTA — If Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s visit to Hasidic Brooklyn this week had yielded only one amusing moment, Dayenu – it would have been enough.

But, thank God, there were many in the Republican presidential candidate’s visit to a Jewish bookstore, shmura matzah bakery and Hasidic school in Borough Park on Tuesday.

“It’s a wonderful, wonderful holiday for our friends in the Jewish community – the Passover,” Kasich told reporters after emerging from the matzah bakery, a box of the fresh-baked stuff in hand.

Yes, Jews are known to love The Passover, almost as much they love The Pre-Election Drop-By from vote-seeking politicians.

Flanked by Hasidic publicist Ezra Friedlander, Kasich then launched into a brief appraisal of the links between Passover and, um, the blood of Jesus Christ.

“The great link between the blood that was put above the lampposts” – er, you mean doorposts, governor — “the blood of the lamb, because Jesus Christ is known as the lamb of God. It’s his blood, we believe …”

It is in the bible in a variety of different ways. John is not off his rocker on Christianity. He did pick an unusual setting, though. That might bite him. But he’s right about Christian interpretation, though.

Oh goodness...its ok to not know a lot about such things...but it’s painful to pretend to know a lot while demonstrating otherwise....

I attended a “seder dinner” class put on my a Messianic Jew (believer of Jesus.). IIRC at the early part of the dinner they put a piece of unleavened bread in a napkin and go hide it. Then at the end the kids go look for it and the one who finds it gets a prize or something.

Anyway - the guy said that it is just a fun game. There is no meaning behind it in the Jewish tradition. Then he said something like “But, as Christians - what does this obviously represent? This fun game for the Jews - I believe it was God giving us (he’s a Jew) insight to Jesus’s death and resurrection. The bread/body wrapped in a napkin/death cloth and hidden away for awhile - only to be discovered again - and the joy the discovery brings!”

Jerry: (exasperated) “5,000 years”.

Tim: “5,000! Even better!”.

But he was referring to a Jewish tradition, identifying the house as having sacrificed their own personal lamb, the choicest male belonging to the house hold (sometimes more of a pet than just livestock) with proof of the sacrifice identified by the smearing of the blood. We aren’t ignorant of the Bible, sir, and his interpretation as believed most popularly by a small section of Christians has no place in this conversation about the Jewish tradition. I have nothing more to say on this.

That does not change the fact that Kasich correctly conveyed a Christian belief. He might have picked a better setting, but he is correct.

Saying it in a Jewish setting may have been the cringe worthy part.

Exactly. He violated the first rule of public speaking: know your audience . . . Jewish folks didn't want to hear that.

He'd flunk the Old Testament class I teach to 6th graders at my parish, been doing it for 15+ years.

Last night we did our prep for the Seder Meal we're having next week. A few years back, I had to fill in the first 20 minutes, because the guest speaker was stuck in traffic. That was a bit intimidating, because he does it so well.

BTW, I didn't know they had lampposts back then...

Christ was the Lamb of God, sacrificed on that Passover long ago to save us from the wrath of the Almighty, just as the lambs’ blood on doorposts protected the Hebrews in Egypt when the Exodus began.

The parallels are divinely poetic.

I know but it sounded good. Plus aren't many dead heads lost in the ozone

"Son, you're gonna drive me to drinkin'

----but Cody didn't write that

You are right about that! If Cruz makes it to the top, they will go after him with same fervor.

He may have chosen a poor time, but he wasn't making stuff up.

The Latin and Italian word for Easter is the same for Passover. The Last Super was a Passover Seder. They have always been connected.

So was it guts or gaffe? Kasich knows he’s not getting the vote; perhaps it’s just evangelism.

I read the entire article and Kasich was correct on everything about both Christian doctrine and Joseph’s most important statement in Genesis.
