German Navy’s (Deutsche Marine) first F125 frigate has begun sea trials on 6 April. The “Baden-Württemberg” has sailed from the shipyard in Hamburg to Cuxhaven. With a crew of 60 men and women, the vessel will assume a series of tests for the systems, subsystems and weapons of the platform.

The F125-class frigates are built by ARGE F125 consortium, lead by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and supplemented by Blohm + Voss, Nordsweerke and Lurssen Werft. A total of four vessels will be built for the German Navy. The “Baden-Württemberg” is scheduled for delivery in 2016 and the last one in 2019.

Although the F125-class ships are frigates their displacement is much larger, closer to that of a destroyer, as it reaches 7,200 tonnes. They are built to replace the eight Bremen-class frigates, which entered service in the ‘80s, and carry out a wide range of missions, both combat and humanitarian.

Their crew is comprised on average of 150 people, although that can change depending on the mission. The vessels’ main weapons are the Oto Melara 127/64 LW Alleggerito gun, 2 x remote-controlled 27 mm Rheinmetall MLG27 cannons, 5 x HITROLE naval turrets with 12.7 mm heavy machine guns, 8 x Boeing RGM-84 Harpoon missiles, 2 x Raytheon RIM-116 RAM CIWS systems and a series of non-lethal weapons.

Nice thought, Germans, but the invasion is coming by land, not by sea, and your chancellor is staunchly supporting the invaders.

Hopefully they won’t run the engines without oil...

With a crew of 60 men and women, the vessel will assume a series of tests for the systems, subsystems and weapons of the platform.

The first system that will be checked is navigation and the PA

They want to make sure it points itself towards Mecca, automatically, 5 times a day and that the PA will sound the call to prayer.

Hey...is that a minaret at the top of the forward tower

Nah. These are probably “Blockade Breakers” for when the southern and eastern countries try to stop seaborne invaders from Africa and Middle East. And Hillary will lead from behind with air support to Keep ‘Em Comin’.

A 5 inch 64 caliber rapid fire gun. 5 inch being one of the best naval calibers out there. Especially in this day of thin skinned “warships”.

Our LCS “ships” have about the same firepower as a Bradley infantry fighting vehicle. An LCS encountering a T-72 tank on a beach would be seriously outgunned.

Looks like there’s space in the middle for torpedo tubes.

They seem quite underarmed for a 7,200 ton ship. I’m shocked at the lack of VLS missiles for land attack.

There’s a lot of space for a lot of things, but the Germans opted for a glorified coast guard ship variant!

https://www.aspi.org.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0016/26503/Kamerman-The-German-experience-slides.pdf

The aforementioned slide is of the German proposal, based on the F-125, for the future Australian frigate contract; it has space for 48 VLS cells as per the manufacturer. Some Websites say it can have 64.

About normal for a frigate today: 110 minimum, 190 maximum.

That should be enough to keep the oil in the gearboxes topped up.

Thank you. It’s a shame we don’t acquire these for our marine expeditionary units since we are building so few Zumwalts.
