Employers, especially in the restaurant and food services industries, are far less willing to take chances on who they hire with so much money on the line. I was shocked to learn that some restaurantscomparable in quality to the ones that hired me with little or no experience on the East Coast
here required a minimum of three to five years of restaurant experience, even for support staff positions like hosts and bussers. I had multiple managers glance at my resume, see that my past jobs were seasonal or temporary, and tell me upfront that unless I could commit to at least a year of labor, they simply wouldnt hire me, despite my qualifications.
Im a young, educated, white male who comes from an upper-middle-class background. In other words, Im exactly the type of person that society supposedly favors over all the rest. If its this difficult for me to land an entry-level, minimum-wage position, then what must it be like for more disadvantaged individuals,
the very people compassionate liberals likely have in mind when they advocate for a spike in the minimum wage? Surely the poor inner-city teenager lacking education and job experience, or the struggling single mother who needs to work much more than just part-time to support her children, will lose out to other applicants even faster than I did.
The fact that cities like Seattle, and now states like California, can freely experiment with economic policy demonstrates the virtues of our nations federalist system. However, our local laboratories of democracy arent always foolproof. Sometimes, they get it wrong.
And Ill bet my non-existent income that in time, the recent minimum wage hikes in cities and states throughout the country will provide further proof of this reality. Alas, in the meantime, my job search continues.

He won’t be the only one....raising wages as much as they’re doing will boot these students out of the market....without some form of commitent....this guy couldn’t give that since he was on “College Break” as he mentioned further in the article.... it would be easy to pick out the guy wasn’t interested in anything more than funding his “vacation”.
I don't know about that, but I planted a rose bush in my former home's yard once, and dug the hole a bit too deep. So I went around the yard and collected all my dog's waste and filled the bottom of the hole with it. When planted, it was just a foot tall, roots wrapped in sawdust and plastic, like you by at any home and garden store. When we moved about ten years later, the rose was nearly six feet tall, and was about 5 feet in diameter and had abundant blossoms all over it every year!....................
All of the above. For federal workers, or federal contract workers, it’s covered under the Davis-Bacon Act of 1931. Individual states have what are termed ‘prevailing wage laws’ that are basicall the same thing for their workers..............
I didn’t catch his job skill or educational major he’s trying for, did you?....................
IOW, he's writing fiction here. He has a job, freelances and is in school. No way employers are going to hire him. They smell a fraud and a law suit.
“temporary and seasonal work....”
I think I see the problem.
That won't do now.
So this guy isn't qualified enough to flip a burger BUT exceeds what the modern media accepts as a journalist.
Hint to Mitch-——change your name to Manuel Achmed Fujimoto. It will help on your Seattle job applications.
The fact that minimum wage people believe this crap is probably why they’re making minimum wage.
Better hint: claim you’re a transgender, and you’ll be hired on the spot.
The fact you moved to Seattle is reason enough not to hire you
that is an indicator of stupid
Apparently the lie works well for the Democrats.
Or he needs to specifically look at freelancing and short term job sites for work instead of applying for longer term positions.
The so-called minimum wage should be properly identified as the minimum legal wage; the true minimum wage is now and always will be $0.00 per hour. Raising the minimum legal wage does two things: introduces the masses to the true minimum wage and encourages business to automate.
If it's that bad, businesses can require a bachelors' degree for a $15/hour entry level job, after a minimum of one year as a intern.
Unwed mothers and minorities hit hardest.
More and more manufacturing is going to Mexico. I really think the democrat party wants to turn this country into a third world country.
A good waitress or waiter in a good restaurant or county club makes more than 15 dollars an hour
she gets a pay cut
