“If abortion is deemed illegal” supposes that the criminal code of a particular jurisdiction will define the elements of the crime, and will spell out if the offense is the provision of an abortion or the procurement of an abortion, or both. Poorly phrased question? Sure, it’s Chris Matthews after all. But none of that excuses a bad answer.
And like a complete fool, Donald Trump answered it. A true Todd Akin moment.

In the era before Roe v Wade women weren’t prosecuted for getting abortions, only abortionists were charged with a crime.
The attitude of the law was that women were victims of abortionists. In the entire 20th century there were exactly two cases of women being charged being involved in a criminal act by getting an abortion.
Chris Matthews was counting on the fact that no one, Trump included, would remember what American law was when abortion was illegal. The majority of people posting here at FR have no idea what the law was. So both the Democrats and their pals in the GOPe have been able to gin up a controversy out of nothing.
I’m all for stop killing babies. Yet Donald Trump believe we should continue taxpayer funding for America’s premier abortion provider. Do you sense a disconnect here?

What posed me off about what Trump said, as he initially said, “Well, conservative a Republicans would say yes.” Wrong Trump, and you don’t speak for conservatives or even Republicans. Speak for yourself, fraud.
A woman who causes her own abortion can currently be charged with practicing medicine without a license, IIRC. Right now it’s not about women having choices; it’s about “doctors” having a lucrative living off of lying to women and offering them deadly solutions at a time when many of them are not in their right mind and are easily influenced. Some women know what they’re doing and are too hard-hearted to care, but for many of them it’s mentally/emotionally about like a 12-year-old girl who gives in to the wishes of a 30-year-old man. That’s why we charge the 30-year-old and not the 12-year-old.
Your observation of the political point I get, as this is how most media view it. But I don’t agree that it does not reflect the prolife point of view. As I said, a host of mitigating circumstances possible, for the mother as for all others involved. But those of us who have spent years in the prolife movement know that in many, perhaps most cases, the mother simply wants to abort (kill) the child for selfish reasons.

Very well said, but then Trump thinks he does not think he needs to ask God for forgiveness. So his answer is not surprising.
I want to stop killing babies but why can’t we be smarter about how we go about it. The left doesn’t telegraph their intentions - why can’t we just run on the issues that we can win with (economy, immigration, ISIS, etc), appoint Pro-life judges and just quietly let “it” happen. Just shut the h3ll up about it.
We have to have candidates that are smart AND disciplined - this shooting from the hip $hit is going to cause a landslide and we won’t be on the winning end. If that happens there will be 3 more leftist Supreme Court justices and, with that, we’re done.
Apparently, ALL republican candidates are okay with women killing more babies. All of them are in favor of pro life laws that exempt women killers.
