On the day that Digital First Media completed its purchase of Freedom Communications parent company of the Orange County Register and the Riverside Press-Enterprise a wave of layoffs hit the Register.
Rob Curley, editor of the paper, confirmed Thursday that it would be his last day. He was among 70-plus staff members who were being let go from the editorial, circulation, advertising and marketing departments, according to sources who spoke on condition of anonymity when discussing the Register.

I bet they will all get better jobs just ask O he says the economy is booming.
The Register used to be a conservative newspaper, one of very few. Sad to see it gone. Dead tree media is on its death bed, though. I was going to say it will be strange to be in a newspaperless society, but then I remembered I haven’t paid for a newspaper subscription in over twenty years. I blame myself. Heh.
Yes indeed. Mcdonalds can hire them. Those jobs will last just until the state imposes its higher minimum wage scale. Then those jobs will have to be automated.
The OC register’s editorial staff is (was) conservative/liberatarian but their regular columnists and staff writers are (were) not. That’s part of the reason I stopped subscribing.
They are bleeding money and went bankrupt. They needed a new owner to be the bad guy and do the layoffs.
I enjoy the Sunday version, otherwise handling paper is too cumbersome.
They will probably evolve into a tabloid format. Gone is the in depth reporting. Sad to see it go.
Not to worry. They can all become members of the WaPo writers group or get hired by the AP.
Still it is hard to imagine a Southern Cal paper not having growing circulation what with all of the fine erudite “immigrant” growth there.
I used to read it on breaks at work 10 years ago and even then I think you are right. The editorials were generally good, but the front page stories rarely made sense from my point of view. I was never a “columns” reader so can’t recall. Did it get worse over the last 10 years ?
It was far more libertarian than conservative. But it’s not gone, it was sold to this new group when the DOJ put the kibosh on selling it to the LA Times.
” but their regular columnists and staff writers are (were) not.”
David Whiting being a prime example. That dolt would routinely parrot SPLC talking points in his column.
It's just the opposite for me. Paper is my friend. It's right there, compliant, robust, accessible at all times. With online stuff, if I may confess as much, I feel like I'm in a coffin, punching at the lid. Give me life.
"You are old, Father William," the young man said,
"And your hair has become very white;
And yet you incessantly stand on your head
Do you think, at your age, it is right?"
Newspapers are dying out all over.
Some papers are having some luck with internet subscribers. I don’t subscribe online, because there is so much free content on the internet.
In about 20 years, maybe sooner, the printed newspaper will have disappeared completely.
I am not too sanguine about Daily News/Mercury News taking over the Register etal.
But its gotta be better than LAT grabbing it!
Isn’t that GREAT? Just heard that today from ABC News! “Robust job growth!” We’re saved!
/s ... if necessary.
Getting news off the internet is frustrating since you are smacked in the face with countless ads and fluff news articles on what should be the “front page”. That kind of stuff never happened even with the worst newspapers, but now we have children running the internet and real news scares them.
Fantastic ceremony today when they promoted the janitor to Editor-In-Chief!
“David Whiting being a prime example.”
Yep, I hate that idiot.
Did you know OC Register writers had to use words “undocumented immigrants”, not “illegal aliens”? Confirmed that when I confronted them on Facebook.
Another thing the antiquated and corrupt federal government has NO business sticking its nose into.
Quoting “Gunsmoke” here:
“Die you egg-sucking pigs!”
