The Shocking Truth About the Electric Chair
Washington Examiner ^ | 03-28-16 | Daniel Allott

Posted on 03/29/2016 9:46:40 AM PDT by DGA

Seven hundred and forty-four people have been executed in the United States over the last 15 years. Just nine of them, according to the nonprofit Death Penalty Information Center, were killed by electrocution.

But that number may soon rise. Amid controversies over lethal injection drugs, several states are in the midst of reintroducing the electric chair as a method of state-sanctioned capital punishment.

The Virginia House of Delegates recently passed legislation that would require the use of the electric chair for condemned prisoners if lethal injection drugs cannot be found. Similar legislation passed Alabama's state house last year and became law in Tennessee the year before.

This renewed interest in the electric chair is in part a result of the increasing difficulty of obtaining the drugs necessary to carry out lethal injections, which has been the execution method of choice since the Supreme Court reinstituted the death penalty in 1976.

It is worth re-examining why the electric chair fell out of favor in the first place.

How to implement the death penalty: another example that there is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Can't say it better than that.

“The most humane is a bullet. Instant death.”

Guillotine. Guaranteed.

The guillotine is the most humane.

I have wondered at times...

When the head is severed by guillotine, do the eyes still function until the brain dies from lack of oxygen? What about the ears? Is the soon-to-be-deceased still aware of their surroundings for the 2 to 3 minutes that the brain is still alive? Possibly no pain but certainly horrifying.

The state of Utah had the firing squad as their death penalty for many years...I don’t believe they use this form of execution now??

I was told that was a Mormon thing. A person who shed blood could never be forgiven unless their blood was shed making any future proxy baptism worthless. Firing squad was the only guarantee of blood being shed.

I'm sure some Freeper knows more.

Shotguns that have slugs in them are not messy when they hit the Man/Woman, just like that guy that got executed in Utah a couple years back by firing squad, I think we should start doing that.

I agree. It’s how I would wish to die if I were to be executed.

Lethal injection is a horrible way to medicalize the taking of a life.

The electric chair is another way to mechanize death and distance the executioners. It is often inhumane and inefficient.

A gun is a proper instrument to bring about a lawful death.

Because lethal injection doesn't gross out the witnesses as bad?

I was hoping for more information and fewer hints on what we should think.

“What is the purpose of capital punishment? Is it to kill with clinical efficiency so as to give victims and their loved ones some sense of justice and closure? Or is it also to make the condemned suffer?”

The author suggests here and elsewhere that use of the electric chair is about inflicting pain. But the article documents that use of the electric chair is growing due to the non-availability of lethal injection drugs. So the author moralizes contrary to his reporting. Liberals are so strange.

It would have been nice if the author had addressed a simple and obvious question. Why is there a shortage of lethal injection drugs?

“increasing difficulty of obtaining the drugs necessary to carry out lethal injections”

I’ve heard that manufacturers of anesthetics that would be great lethal injection substances such as propohol won’t allow those drugs to be used for killing people.

if lethal injection drugs cannot be found.

Huh? Couldn't they just inject air into their arteries to cause death? Or give them a handful of sleeping pills and a bottle of booze from the drug store?
