TV news talent took on the look of innocent bystanders being drawn into a gunfight today when GOP presidential candidates Ted Cruz and Donald Trump exchanged fire over an unsourced National Enquirer report alleging Cruz had carried on extramarital affairs with five women.
I have to say, Im trying to sort of figure out how to cover this, All In anchor Chris Hayes said as he moderated a chat with MSNBCs national correspondent Joy Reid and the Daily Beasts Betsy Woodruff. He noted that several outlets, including Breitbart News, had opted not to run with the National Enquirer story because it was so thinly sourced. Woodruff said her site thought about writing this story several months ago, but we didnt want to broadcast baseless rumors had no connection to reality by saying, Hey, these stories are going around.
When the story broke and when it really blew up on Twitter today, we thought, All right, lets pull the trigger, she explained. The Daily Beasts take was that it was Marco Rubio backers who had been shopping the story to media outlets for six months, with no takers.
Things got particularly uncomfortable for CNN during a live on-air segment in which Kate Bolduan asked two talking heads former Cruz communications director Amanda Carpenter and pro-Trump newspaper columnist Adriana Cohen to discuss the two candidates clubbing each other in defense of their wives. You remember: an anti-Trump SuperPAC made an ad showing Trumps model wife in a nude photo with a headline warning she could be the next First Lady. Trump shot back that he might spill the beans about Cruzs wife, and later re-tweeted photos comparing Melania to a particularly unflattering picture of Cruzs wife Heidi.
I think we should move on, Cohen said of that storyline, which was yesterdays talker but you know how cable news likes to hang on to a good thing. Where we should move to is the National Enquirer story that has reported Ted Cruz has allegedly had affairs with at least five mistresses, including youve been named Amanda.
(Actually, she had not been named in the article, though shed been IDd by other media outlets whod jumped in to play that abovementioned game.)
Im sorry, I dont think thats moving on at all, Adriana, interrupted an aghast Bolduan. After pausing to inform CNN viewers the network has no reporting of its own on the tabloid story, she then turned the floor over to Carpenter.
Trump, meanwhile, issued a statement on his Facebook page, denying any involvement with the tabloid report.
I have no idea whether or not the cover story about Ted Cruz in this weeks issue of the National Enquirer is true or not, but I had absolutely nothing to do with it, did not know about it and have not, as yet, read it, the GOP front-runner said in a statement.
But, of course, he made sure to note the tabloid had been right about O.J. Simpson, John Edwards and many others, referencing the former senator from North Carolina and onetime VEEP candidate, whose career ultimately was nuked by the Enquirers report about his love child with filmmaker Rielle Hunter.
Scary.
I think that Trump is a total cynic. In this horse race he has from the start constantly used the whip against other jockies in the race who threatened him. He knows how to use his opponents weaknesses to cut them down. Look how he went after Carson.
“Calcified thinking.”. I think that fits well.
Teddy Bare's garbage. Public figures can sue and win. I await his lawsuit with ill concealed amusement.
I cannot fathom the deprevation of this GOP process. The gopE have ignored us for so long, that the whole process has gone off the rails. I pray this is not true about Cruz and that it comes out and is disproven soon. The pictures of Marlena Trump nude were appalling enough. A First Lady with soft porn pics? Really. Is this what the campaign for the highest office in the land has come to? I may join the silent majority and never vote again at this rate. God help us.

Oh I think the wives get it, too
It’s not the messenger it’s the message
The other day, The Treehouse Conservative said it was leaked by Rubio months ago. Not Trump.
Do you think it strange that not a single member of the US Senate has stood up for Cruz and blasted this story as a lie?
They know
Ping to # 117.
Eh, what?!!!?
Paisley bathrobe??? Wandering the halls???!! Oh, dear.
Thanks, Maggie.
I totally agree
When you lay down with dogs...
You’re so right. Let’s hope a few at the top are taken down this election cycle and sine others get a wake up call.
Your post #56 is an excellent summation of what is happening behind the scenes.
There is no question in my mind that you have described the GOP-E puppetmasters’ plan to usurp the will of the voters to get their nominee in.
Their only miscalulation was Trump’s wildly successful campaign.
But, playing out before our eyes, is one of their contingency plans. The only variable was the timing.
I can understand what you said up there because i was a cruz supporter for years. But i just wanted to ask you to consider the fact that in the upcoming days, IF this is true and the story continues, some nasty things will be happening.
Of course, the GOPe are trying to make this look like it’s from Trump (a “twofer” — take out both Cruz and Trump and/or weaken them before July). Another thing you can bet money on will be that social media and forums like this will be crawling with so-called “trumpets” who seem to take great glee and satisfaction in the whole thing.
Yes, some will be genuine pro-trump people who let their emotions get the best of them, but some others will be paid trolls whose goal is to get us to hate each other, hoping that hate will last at least until July and a brokered convention.
And to all the Trump folks, try to put yourselves in their place. If this is true, please remember that everything we say is important. It’s Easter. Golden Rule time! If that doesn’t motivate you, just remember that every time we say something rude, we’re losing a potential ally against the RINOs.
In a nutshell, this is why the GOPe were totally comfortable supporting Cruz. They had a poison pill prepared.
Thanks for the link hoosier - you are really quite helpful with pertinent information!
I’ve been asking Cruz voters just how they feel about amnesty, since all his backers/endorsers are 100% pro amnesty. How does any thinking person believe that IF Cruz were to get in (I’ve doubted that he would for months now)how would he go against those who put him there?
The people you speak of, the powers that be, want their damn amnesty/open borders and will stop at nothing to get it! It’s so clear and I’m honestly stumped how so many can’t/won’t connect the dots. It’s ALL there!
Wondering, is her lawyer Levin?! Now I’m sorry, but that would hilarious.
I agree completely. To be fair, I do feel bad for Cruz, whether this stuff is true or not, it’s a horrible situation for him and his family on a personal level.
I do NOT feel bad for the pukes at the RNC/GOPe open border freaks who I have little to no doubt are behind this garbage.
To see how they treat their own, is it any wonder we have had it UP TO HERE?!
The only one I do not feel anything for is Amanda aka blacklist guru - IF she did any of this, let it sink her and the awful crap she spreads. She’s ZERO help to America.
And oddly enough, with every denial by the Cruz fans, they take the opportunity to bash Trump and his supporters by default.
Are people daft? WHERE IS THE PROOF IT CAME FROM TRUMP?
Oh right, there is NONE. Can’t let that get in the way of Cruz supporters who relish in calling Trump supporters the strangest names - seems they take after their candidate in that way. Can’t be Cruz = must be Trump.
No wonder this country suffers - not enough rational thought or logic being applied.
