... Ten days later, while speaking to the Ohio EPA workers, Kasich called Barrett an “idiot” multiple times for simply doing his job. “Have you ever been stopped by a policeman, who was an idiot?” he asked his audience. “I had this idiot pull me over on 315. Listen to this story. He says to me, you passed this emergency vehicle on the side of the road and you didn’t yield. I didn’t even see, where the heck was it. The last thing I would ever do would be to pass an emergency vehicle. Are you kidding me?” The dash cam footage clearly shows that he did.

Most states passed these laws in the last decade, but most Americans are still totally unaware of them.

Kasich was stopped back when OH was on of the few, if not the only, states to have such a law.

The irony is that such laws almost by definition catch only the slowest and most careful drivers over there in the left lane. Especially given that in OH you apparently needed to appear in court, rather than simply paying a fine, for such an offense, giving a ticket, rather than a warning, IMO was unnecessary. Maybe there was a quota? A revenue target for the cop?

I don’t like Kasich’s politics or his holier-than-thou style at all, but it looks to me like he was totally polite to the cop, and the only thing he got wrong in retelling the story was that the warrant for arrest for nonappearance was left implicit rather than explicit.

The law needs to be changed to slow down to a certain speed

On Florida interste you are supposed to move over a lane..

People see a flashing light and they pull over and most never look

A huge defeat will do damage, but not really destroy those in charge. Right now it is the only viable alternative to the RATS. Those in charge will still have their jobs, perks, fundraisers, and DC parties.

Its the new “get over/pull over law”. I got set up and nailed.

One patrol car on the shoulder lights flashing. I coasted by on the inside lane. Immediately pulled over by another cop.

He was an asshole, acted like I just robbed a bank. “No, I dont know what I did.”

My crime...I didnt move out into the passing lane, leaving distance between the parked patrol car. $225 ticket.

“Most people who have occupied positions of power always think they are above the law and look down upon law enforcement officers.”

And that comment also applies to the cops, who, don’t feel the leasst bit compelled to observe the laws they enforce on the rest of us. If you think i’m not telling the truth, just follow a cop car for a few blocks and see just how many laws they break. But don’t give them the idea that you’re following them, or they will stop you and figure out how to charge you with some obscure “obstruction” law.
GOPe, Big-Money folks, Government “employees,” Cops, they’re all the same in that they are of the belief that the laws don’t apply to them. Example: down in Southern California they have a toll road that runs into Los Angeles from the south. When they discovered massive abuse of the FasTrak system, what did they find? the most egregious violaters were LEO’s and their families (whose vehicle registrations are hidden from the public by law) with the number one violator a “white hat” who works at LAX who had run up a tab of more than $15,000 in unpaid tolls! And you know what? HIs department tried to “sheld him” from being found out by refusing to give him up by providing the toll authority with his name citing the privacy law surrounding his vehicle registration.

If there’s a voter revolt, who will replace the candidates the voters remove? More Tea Party liars?

I’m afraid it’s going to take more than votes.

When he offered to pay the fine instead of going to court I think he was offering a bribe. He should have been yanked from the car and arrested. And I don’t like cops.

They possess very little power in reality, and their exercise of power is always scrutinized to the max.

If they pull you over for following them it is because they are in sights of many targets coming from many directions. Thus they want to check you out as a possible threat to their safety.

That does not mean that all police are good, like any other group there are always bad apples amongst them. I know for a fact they do not like the ones who abuse their powers because it makes them all look bad.

Does your name imply you own a corvette? If so what kind? My wife has a 2014 C7, and I have a 2013 Grand Sport. Both are verts.

I passed a Maryland trooper with his lights on as I was coming to a red light. I was doing maybe 20 in a 45 zone.

He pulled me over for not changing lanes, not noticing that I couldn’t due to the car next to me.

I was armed and ready with the actual law on my phone had he returned with a ticket but backed off when he gave me a warning.

I should have fought that just on principle but I needed to get somewhere.

Part of the reason cops get hit is that drivers are blinded and disoriented by the vast number of LED emergency lights on police cars.

They are attracted to the light and aim toward it.

I shared this theory with a friend who sells emergency lighting components and he said they are studying that theory.

Maybe, but there was also his question, “Is there any way I can pay the fine right now?”

Bribery is usually not a good way out of a ticket.

While I understand the desire to protect emergency personnel and police from being hit by passing traffic, the “move over” law creates a worse backup of traffic and accidents become more likely because of it. Some states with this law make an exception if traffic makes moving over impossible, which helps because it prevents people from feeling the need to stop dead in the right lane trying to move over to avoid a citation, who then get rear-ended.

While Kasich is stopped in front of the police car, the dashcam shows a lot of other vehicles passing them in the near lane but with space to pull out!

Did he really say “right now”?

Then yeah, that was bribery and of course totally wrong and shameful, especially given his position.

I was always taught to pull over to the right lane or off to the side if only one lane each way and to ALSO slow down until the police and/or emergency vehicle or vehicles passed me.

He did not do anything wrong.

I pass cops who have pulled over drivers all the time. What, is all the traffic supposed to stop because a cop is pulled over to the side of the road?

That is a cop with a need for real work.
