What bothers me most is that Republicans don’t seem to be learning anything from Trumpism.
Jeb Bush and Trump were the two polar opposites of this election. Bush was obsessed with raising money and spent all his time pulling in dollars six figures at a time. His idea of a political rally was to go to a posh country-club home, chat with 30 to 50 donors and swoop up checks with lots of zeroes. Trump’s events attract actual voters in the tens of thousands. Bush wouldn’t have won if he’d had a billion dollars.
Trump challenges Republican and conservative orthodoxy on trade, immigration and foreign policy. No one took him seriously because he had rough edges, said offensive things and had never won an election. But lo and behold, a plurality of GOP primary voters liked what he said. The explanation may go back to the famous cereal commercial: “He likes it! Hey, Mikey!”
On these pages I’ve criticized Trump’s Fortress America position on immigration and trade. But this year at least, the voters don’t agree with me. They do want the wall. They do want to get tough with China. They do think foreign goods are taking American jobs. They do want to keep out Muslims. They do want a balanced budget and an end to foreign aid. And they won’t be intimidated by the thug tactics of the left.
If Trump wins the nomination and then the election, he will do so by forging a new coalition of voters. He will lose many highbrow Republicans, but he will gain millions of independents and blue-collar Democrats — commonsense workers who’ve been crushed by Obama’s anti-business policies.
They would be a coalition of voters who want to put America first. And maybe it’s about time.

One could say it was genius move on Trump’s part but he just simply tapped into a huge reservoir that was being ignored and marginalized. Simple Business Success 101— find a need that people want and supply it.

“He will lose MANY HIGHBROW Republicans?” Frankly that sounds like a win-win situation.
THEY are why we are in this situation today.
This is only the 2nd half of a very good article/analysis.
Trump is perceived as an “America First” guy. I get that. I believe he thinks that, as do his supporters.
And preferring America would be a big change for our Establishment. They only like America in so far as they can rape her for cash and power.
The big question is, what would Trump do with an “America First” mandate?
Other than possibly a wall, I really can’t tell, since he has been on both sides of every issue of which I’m aware, sometimes on the same day.
That isn’t to say we oughtn’t elect him. We should. We just can’t be sure of what we’re really getting, policy wise.
Perspective, wise, though, we do get someone who would actively try to be pro-American. That’s a big change. I’ll take it. I’m just not holding out for any particular ideological program.
Aside from Trade, Stephen Moore is a Liberal Democrat with these positions. Good riddance.

I am so very tired of reading that stupid statement, it is not true and shows laziness on the part of the writer in not checking his positions on issues, many he has held since the 80’s.

Not to put words in your mouth or represent something you didn’t say, I just want to add that Trump didn’t put his finger in the air and see which way the political winds were blowing and go along with the breeze. He actually believes this stuff! He has for YEARS. It is who Trump is, regardless of who he may have made political/business contributions to.
Similar to Rush’s supposed “mind numbed robots” where callers constantly debunk this idea and say “finally they found someone who agreed with THEM”.
Trump voters finally have a candidate that agrees with THEM! NOT the other way around.
THe powers that be only care about the top 1%. We’ve been operating under that paradigm (let the rich get as rich as they want to be and they’ll bring the rest of us with them...uh no, they left the bottom 99% way behind) for 30+ years. It will not change. Now they just have to get us to accept serfdom.

Moore is outstanding. I love how he not only embraces Trumpism, but, he seems to very subtly embrace the possibility of thinking about new policies....
America first.
We get that right, then we can have a meaningful conversation about important policies without the democrats, and without the GOPe. That’s the goal.

To complete the picture image, let’s not forget “Howdy” was a puppet (strings and all) Captain BO’B, the master of ceremonies would always ask the Peanut Gallery “Hey, Gang. What time is it?”

Voters are not nuts and though we might not know every nuance regarding trade, we still think we know a good thing when we see it. What we’ve had ‘making deals’ in the past is not working. We’re giving away the farm Not only in ‘trade’ but in our ability to solve problems as well.
We have permitted our ‘leaders’ to tell US what to do, how to do it, when to do it and how many times it will be done. Voters, so accustomed to the continuity of life continue to plod through the years and slowly become the ‘puppet’
Our country is not a baseball card found in a box of Wheaties.
