Will: The GOP’s blocking of court pick is indefensible
sltrib.com ^ | 3/20/16 | George Will

WASHINGTON • The Republican Party's incoherent response to the Supreme Court vacancy is a partisan reflex in search of a justifying principle. The multiplicity of Republican rationalizations for their refusal to even consider Merrick Garland radiates insincerity.

Republicans instantly responded to Antonin Scalia's death by proclaiming that no nominee, however admirable in temperament, intellect and experience, would be accorded a hearing. They say their obduracy is right because:

Because they have a right to be obdurate, there being no explicit constitutional proscription against this.

Or because President Obama's demonstrated contempt for the Constitution's explicit text and for implicit constitutional manners justifies Republicans reciprocating with contempt for his Supreme Court choice, regardless of its merits.

Or because, 24 years ago, then-Sen. Joe Biden — he is not often cited by Republicans seeking validation — suggested that a president's right to nominate judges somehow expires, or becomes attenuated, in a "political season," sometime after the midterm elections during a second presidential term.

Or because if a Republican president tried to fill a court vacancy during his eighth year, Democrats would behave the way Republicans are behaving.

Don’t worry George, if they get a few more you won’t be allowed to publish any longer,....at least not as a ‘conservative’.

But it’s okay when the Dems do it? That’s why we’re losing.

It is defensible on the grounds of parity with Democratic behavior in the past, alone.

Of course, it is also defensible on the grounds of politics, Mr. Will.

Politics is permissible.

Will just out and out does not want a Conservative court does he.

What an absolute fraud this man is.

For decades he has acted as if he was a Conservative. The man is nothing of the kind.

He’s a damn Obama supporter here. An Obana appointment here, flips the cour to the Left, and Will is pushing for that.

He is PAID to be a “reasonable” conservative. That is he is PAID to push liberalism as a “conservative”.

I wasn’t aware there were any conservatives for him to stand with!!!! The only reason these BASTARDS are standing firm for now, is because they are scared to death for their own happy asses!!! My belief is they will fold!!!

Exactly. He’s a liberal who has taken money for years to write and say things that sound conservative on the surface. He sold out the Constitution at least forty years ago.

They are coming out of the woodwork this cycle, aren’t they. We are getting a true picture of those who claim to be on our side who really are not. The second I learned Scalia had passed I knew that the inside the Beltway crowd (Will especially) would cave to this. To the upper crust like George (I’m smarter than everyone in the room) Will, the destruction of our Constitution is a theoretical thing to be fought by the Marques of Queensbury rules while the other side slugs us repeatedly in the genitals. Therein lies the rub, I seriously doubt that the emasculated inside the Beltway (supposedly) conservative upper crust has any genitalia left.

Behold the Beltway conservative!

He knows full well that allowing another liberal on the court will certainly shred whatever remains of our Constitution and yet, so pure is his wisdom, so keen his insight, that only the luddites and rubes would question him.

Trust our GOP representatives to offer sound judgement!

Yeah, because they have proven so trustworthy. As if they have not proven time and again to be Judases that lie and betray w/ duplicity and soothing words.

It is likes of Mr. Will that have destroyed whatever it means to be "conservative".

His council is barren.
