GOP mulls unity ticket: ‘This makes sense’
MSNBC ^ | 3/10 | Jane Timm

Conservatives seeking to derail Donald Trump are wondering: What if the contest weren’t one-on-one — what if it became two-on-one? In other words, what if rivals Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio teamed up and took on Trump together?

Enter the unity ticket: Rubio drops out of the race, and Cruz promises to make Rubio his running mate if Cruz becomes the GOP nominee. The pair then takes on Trump together, pooling supporters, donors, activists, and organizations.

It’s an out-there idea in an out-there, unpredictable election that proponents say would offer the establishment GOP a team to rally behind and give Trump a run for his money. Cruz, the argument goes, has earned the favor of the far-right conservative movement, while Rubio has the optimism, energy, and crossover appeal the GOP knows it needs to win a general election.

I don't think this would work. Am I alone?

It would be directly aimed at Trump.

Everything directly aimed at Trump backfires.

It might work in the primary, but Cruz/Rubio will lose to Hillary.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the whole point of the primary process is to nominate someone who actually has a chance of WINNING!

The author fails to realize that Cruzio already joined forces against Trump and failed.

It is disgusting to see the GOP-E party bosses destroying the R party candidates again.
Prepare for President Hillary (or more likely, imho, President Sanders).

The assumption is all of Rubio’s support will got to Cruz

Don’t see any evidence to support that assumption.

ANY ticket with Rubio on it will NOT get the vote of my family — we feel that strongly against the duplicitous AMNESTY PIMP Rubio.

Cruz/Rubio would be an attempted coup, not a reasonable alternative to pro-USA Donald Trump. Instead of USA first, it would be Cubans first. The very thought that the elite backstabbers would choose ineligible candidates to stop a patriotic, successful US citizen from being nominated makes my blood boil.

This might have worked a month ago, but the flaw in this approach is that Rubio would be an anchor on any ticket, not an asset. If he can't even win Florida in a Republican primary, then he adds no value to a GOP ticket.

President Hillary. Hillary’s gang already have the game rigged against Sanders. Bernie doesn’t know it, but then, he probably doesn’t know how he gets fed each day.

I do think this is what is going on. Cruz has the Bush money.

Rubio screwed it up royally at the last debate...thanks to Cruz's encouragement. It was very noticeable.

That BFF handshake behind Trump's back. Rubio was sooooo naïve. Cruz is soooooo dishonest.

No, it’s nonsense.

If the GOPe had gotten behind Cruz before SC and Supertuesday it would have worked.
Of course that would have never happened- they were still pushing Jeb!.

I like Cruz a lot. Don’t want little Marco anywhere near the white house though.
