Romney did not endorse anyone. Romney did mention Trump University but not two class actions law suits one; NY signed on by 5000 participants. The other filed in California where he will have to testfy perhaps in the middle of the campaign. Both alledging deceptive busness practces.
And because Romney did not endorse anyone speculation is what quote they unquote want is a brokered convention. Cruz may not mention or support the Romney outburst. But he should question and bring up those two law suits during tonights debate.

With a bunch of winner-takes-all states coming up, he will probably have no problem getting the 8 states. They could change the rule, but it would be dishonest and, more importantly, appear very dishonest to the voters. Everyone would say they stole it from him if he meets the current criteria and they rob him of the nomination.
If no one gets at least 50% of the delegates then an open convention is automatic. That does not mean the person with the most delegates will not get the nomination, but it is possible.
If such a scenario resulted in Trump-Cruz, I would be happy. I have a feeling though that this would not be the desired outcome of the GOPe in an open convention.
