Oregon lawmakers approve landmark minimum wage increase

Oregon is trailblazing a national debate with a proposal that would not only make the state's minimum wage for all workers the highest in the U.S., but would do so through a unique tiered system based on geography. [...]

The proposal would start a series of gradual increases over six years: Oregon's current $9.25 an hour minimum - already one of the highest in the nation - would jump to $14.75 in metro Portland, $13.50 in smaller cities such as Salem and Eugene, and $12.50 in rural communities by 2022.

Those minimums would dethrone Massachusetts - where the statewide rate will climb to $11 an hour next year - from the top spot, according to D.C.-based Economic Policy Institute, which has been tracking wage increases across the nation. ...

Will end up being more cost effective to buy robots than hire workers.

Enough ! Let’s raise the minimum wage to $1,000,000,000 per hour. Now we can put this issue to bed.

I assume Oregonians had no say through a vote in this minimum wage increase.

Not a ballot initiative; they are using the "short session" that was authorized to tweak budgets to ramrod things.

Time to repeal that and take them back to an even shorter session every two years.

BUT unless it goes through as an "emergency" measure, a petition can throw it onto the ballot where the voters have at least an opportunity to shoot it down.

It appears that these States raising the minimum wage rates don’t have anyone in their gov’ts. that has ever taken basic economics.

Businesses will have to close, prices will rise and, with that tiered plan in OR workers will leave the small towns and move to the big cities with higher wages for the same work; thus killing off the smaller communities.

Liberals are truly idiots.

I almost moved to Oregon in late 2004. Prices had gone up over 35% on properties I had already looked at. I looked in Nevada instead. Certainly glad now that I did.

One poster is correct=-=——Minimum wage becomes ZERO when businesses leave there. Otherwise, all businesses have to be ONE person establishments. -—The owner only.
