Did Winfrey ask him about abortion, affirmative action, Cuba, the NSA, same-sex marriage, the stimulus, the bailout, the Iraq war, etc.?

I couldn’t care less about “trade deals” one way or another. It’s not in my 100 top issues. There are far more important things to worry about.

We haven’t solved the Muslim problem yet. But democracy has worked well in Asia. Japan was very similar to jihadists in WW2 but democracy has contributed to transforming their country into a peaceful world power.

It is not a VAT. It is a sales tax.

What is manifestly immoral is the income tax.

The IRS has destroyed our privacy under auspices of auditing our deductions.

there WERE no WMD's when Bush made his wrong-headed decision to invade Iraq - Trump is right about that.

OK, Alright! (but they were there were only weeks before, and no one really knew for sure)

The correct decision would have been to blow the soddie cities and palaces off the map, and anywhere else alkida was located.

The “Art of the Deal” was written in 1987 correct?!
At that point in time no one had any idea Reagan had anything wrong with him.
Trump was just wtiting his true feelings about Ronald Reagan.

And according to informative notes in the Reagan library...Reagan and/or his aides had no affection for Trump either.

I couldn’t hear all of it, but the part I did hear was definitely an appropriate Spanish answer with a good accent. I worked a number of years in a bilingual job.

if they were about trump’s sister being a SC justice, I saw that too. VERY disturbing; trump said it, she’s a flaming liberal and yet, it’s not to be posted on FR

You can’t complain that Trump wasn’t fast out of the box on urging no action on replacing Judge Scalia, God rest his soul.

Trump is saying ‘take the oil.’ He certainly wants us to consider that as taking a significant cut for ourselves and leaving the locals with, at most, less loot than what they’ve used to. The locals would be motivated to NOT work with us, as they wouldn’t be getting their usual cut. They will be motivated to resist that, especially since there’s not much else worth much there. Controlling the oil port wouldn’t do it as the oil is well north of there. They’d just not send any to the port. They might even move it and sell it through neighboring countries to spite us. You have to defend everything from the wells through the whole length of the pipelines to the port facility (which is a ways inland up a river) and all the way out through the gulf until out of reach of their Shiite allies in Tehran. You either need to provide security yourself or set up the equivalent of another Saddam as a puppet to do it for you. If the latter is even possible there today it would still require a lot of US support forces. There is no off the cuff implementation possible for Trump’s off the cuff claim.

OK so Cruz is proposing an individual flat tax of 10% which is great, but then he’s proposing something for a business tax. (BTW, ANY business tax is no good because in fact there is no such thing - it is a hidden tax to the individual via forced higher prices to the consumer because of the resulting higher costs of doing business.)

Nevertheless, Cruz, and everyone else as far as I know, is proposing some kind of so-called “business tax. But what exactly is Cruz proposing for a business tax?

Cruz may be referring to the Linder Fair Tax. I read the 65 pages of the proposal more than ten years ago. It called for a 23% sales tax on all new products, presumably including big ticket items like cars and houses. It also called for a guaranteed monthly “prebate” equal to the amount of taxes someone on a poverty income would have to pay for basic necessities of living. Apparently there would be no tax on used houses, cars, clothing, furniture, etc. This would appeal to those who favor conservation of resources and recycling. On the other hand I did not see anything about sending money out of the country without paying taxes. This smacks of the “offshoring” that some at FR have pointed out is sending our jobs out of the country. In addition there would be no limitation on the money that the super rich could take out of the country without ever contributing to this tax. Some countries have limits or taxes on the money you can take out of country.

People have to distinguish between the Constitutionally allowed income tax because of the 16th Amendment, a national sales tax, and the VAT.

First of all, until you repeal the 16th Amendment, nobody should be talking about ADDING an entirely new federal tax, a national sales tax. People who think all you have to do is have legislation that disallows income tax in favor of the sales tax. But of course that is a silly idea since the 16th Amendment of Constitution authorizes the feds at any time to implement an income tax. People need to remember that the Constitution trumps legislation (Art VI, Cl 2 - the Supremacy Clause). Unless you love taxes, adding a national sales tax before repealing the 16th Amendment would be foolhardy.

Secondly, if you by some miracle actually repeal the 16th Amendment, I agree that a sales tax - a tax upon purchase at the cash register - would be preferable for a variety of reasons, some of which you mention.

Thirdly, the VAT MUST be distinguished from an actual sales tax at the cash register for purchases. NOT a “consumption tax” or value-added tax (VAT). That would be a disaster allowing the feds to tax each stage along the production and supply process and allowing more intrusion and interference the inner workings of business that would also allow more hidden taxes than ever. VAT is a disaster.

I, too, feel for the unborn children. How do you feel about helping them after they are born if it is to poor, alcoholic, drug addicted, abusive, or other questionable parents?

Not sure what your point is listing all those things Saddam Hussein did not do.

He didn’t shoot Kennedy either if I recall.

He was an evil, evil dictator who killed, tortured and starved his own people.

Nobody can be sure how many of his own people he killed but at least a hundred thousand probably much more.

So ... maybe that was none of our business ... maybe they were just Iraqis and deserved it.

But back then we had some sense of obligation to save innocent people no matter their race.

Saddam deserved to die. I’m glad he’s dead, even if he didn’t shoot John Lennon.

Good question. I don’t like when children have to grow up in that circumstance. But at the same time, just killing them is even worse.

I think it would take a better leader than me to solve this problem, though encouraging personal responsibility and reforming welfare is a good start.

“Bush seems to be a sh** stirrer”

Last night I got the feeling that Bush and Cruz had conspired to take down Trump.

It was Bush’s job to poke at Trump, scream at him, and Jeb’s stacked audience sounding like a Jerry Springer audience and boo-ing Trump. Basically do what he could to get Trump flummoxed.

Then the camera panned to Cruz, standing there all quiet, calm and smug looking like he’s Mr. Wonderful and above the fray. The topic of discussion was nothing to do with Cruz; there was no reason for panning to him unless the cameraman had been given a heads-up.

I didn’t see this, but another poster said that after the debate when they all were leaving the stage, Jeb brushed past Trump, went over to Cruz and they left together all buddy-buddy, Jeb’s hand on Cruz’ shoulder.

Supposedly, from way back, there’s a Texas Bush-Cruz connection.
