Bad news for jetsetters: Global warming to cause costlier flights to US, scientist warns

AIR passengers face longer costlier flights to the United States as a result of global warming, a British scientist warned yesterday.

Climate change is expected to accelerate the high altitude jet stream which blows from west to east, said Reading University atmospheric scientist Paul Williams.

This will speed up eastbound flights but slow down westbound flights by much more, he claimed.

"The bad news for passengers is that westbound flights will be battling against stronger headwinds. The good news is that eastbound flights will be boosted by stronger tailwinds, but not enough to compensate for the longer westbound journeys."

As most people know (other than this idiot), this has been happening for millions of years.
My last flight to CA took 4hrs and return took 3hrs.
Average flight time...3.5hrs.
It all balances in the end.

That’s a good explanation for walking, and may be this guy’s basis for his premise.

But aircraft don’t get tired from flying into a headwind. It’s the same thrust requirement as flying with a tailwind, because the airspeed is the same.

The only difference is how long you have to fly in either direction.

I notice it doesn’t state WHEN. Convenient eh? ...so it’s just another guess that will be forgotten when it doesn’t happen.

All predictions should have a WHEN. Otherwise it’s as scientific as voodoo.

You'll only experience this problem when the jet is going west to east. If there is a significant longwave trough over the Atlantic, most of the air will be moving NW to SE and SW to NE with nearly dead areas in between. As seen with this map showing a calm area over Michigan.

Or, as other people have suggested you fly at the altitude with the most favorable winds.

It used to be that scientists weren’t compromised idiots.

BTW, is it just me, or is this guy's unspoken assumption that westbound pilots routinely fly into the jet stream?
