Confederate monuments first erected after the Civil War to honor Southern soldiers have increasingly been targeted by civil rights activists who say they are offensive to blacks and should be taken down. An Alabama legislator wants to make sure that doesn't happen without state lawmakers' approval.

Republican Sen. Gerald Allen of Tuscaloosa has proposed a bill that would prohibit the removal of historic monuments, plaques and statues from public property unless a committee of lawmakers grants a waiver.

"I think there is an undercurrent, not just in Alabama, but throughout the nation" of people who "want to kind of rewrite history or whitewash it," Allen said during a public hearing on the bill Tuesday. ...

I’m just hoping some state officials will stand up to this nonsense all through the South.

It is history,not hate.

Enough of this insanity.

(FYI-—I’ve lived in Massachusetts my entire life)

This is the world's first Confederate monument, located in DeFuniak Springs, Florida. A few months ago, a group of agitators demanded the flag be removed. At least they didn't insist on the monument itself tho I suspect that will be next. The county tried to compromise by suggesting they replace the battle flag with the stars and bars. The agitators refused but I don't think they got their way. I haven't been by in a couple of years but next time I go to DeFuniak, I will look and see.

“I think there is an undercurrent, not just in Alabama, but throughout the nation” of people who “want to kind of rewrite history or whitewash it,”

The understatement of the year!

NC did just that right after Nikki Haley threw the Confederate battle flag under the bus in SC. Now all confederate monuments and markers in the state are protected.

Thanks for the reminder. Nikki Haley is one of the greatest disappointments ever.

This kind of crap must be stopped.

Bingo. Destroy historical artifacts and monuments and remove the history attached to them so you can erect new symbols to mold the fabric of the society you want to create. The Muzzies and Soros are behind the movement to remove all evidence of patriotic American heritage. They know exactly what they are doing.

On that subject here is the letter I got published in the Washington Times, which by the way in the paper Ronald Reagan said he read every day.

Subject: Demeaning Our Military Heritage

This country owes as much of its enviable martial heritage to the South as the North. But now to serve popular morality, we must banish from history the Confederate battle flag and those who served under it. Responding to these assertions, I quote Joshua Chamberlain who received the Confederate surrender at Appomattox.

“Before us in proud humiliation stood the embodiment of manhood: men whom neither toils and sufferings, nor the fact of death, nor disaster, nor hopelessness could bend from their resolve; standing before us now, thin, worn, and famished, but erect, and with eyes looking level into ours, waking memories that bound us together as no other bond;—was not such manhood to be welcomed back into a Union so tested and assured?”

Winston Churchill commented concerning American entry into WW II that victory was then assured, because our Civil War demonstrated the tenacity required to defeat the Nazis.
