Released felons gain right to vote in Maryland following veto override
The Baltimore Sun ^ | February 9, 2016 | Erin Cox

The Maryland Senate narrowly overrode Gov. Larry Hogan's final veto from last year's General Assembly session, paving the way to reinstate voting rights to felons before they complete probation or parole.

The 29-18 vote on Tuesday puts the law on the books 30 days from now and represents a political defeat for Hogan, a Republican. The bill was the sixth that Hogan vetoed last year, and the sixth the Democrat-controlled General Assembly reinstated.

The vote, twice delayed in order to muster enough support, followed an expansive debate that touched on resolving racial disparities in the criminal justice system and protecting victims of violent crime. Proponents argued voting would help felons rejoin society. The current system requires felons to complete probation and parole before registering to vote. Supporters of the law said that process was confusing and demoralizing to people trying to rebuild their lives.

Yeah. That, I disagree with. That's what I get for not reading the whole story. Thanks!

I also missed the "before" in the first sentence of the excerpt. Read right over it. Proudly keeping with FReeper tradition. ;-)

I did not intend to insult. I was aiming more for persuasion. I should have stopped after my first sentence, I suppose. I’m sorry I’ve upset you.

If enough non-felons vote in favor of the kind of idiocy you are describing, such that the ex-felon vote tips the balance... then society will get what it deserves.

You could have made your point without the bite. I would have disagreed, but not bit back.

I make it a point to write as exactly as I speak, I sometimes project that same approach to those I have discourse with. Sometimes that isn’t a good idea.

If you meant it, that’s fine. I’m good.

Hard to understand why the country did it to Reagan 30 years ago. I was 17 then, and couldn’t figure it out, and still can’t.

It seems that 2007 measure didn’t include those out on probation or parole, they had to finish the probation or parole first.

Now they don’t have to finish the probation or parole before being allowed to vote, thanks to this veto override.

As I recall, the GOP gained two Senate seats and five House seats in the legisl00ture, but that wasn’t enough to stop the legisl00ture from having a veto-proof Rat majority.

Thanks

I didn't have the time earlier to figure that out myself so I asked and you nailed it.

Obviously the 2014 election rejecting the O Malley supported Dem as governor shows that they didn't get enough criminal votes, so they opened the vote to even more criminals for this year.

Libs rule : "Democracy only works when we can get the worst human excrement to decide who rules us( puts us in charge), and if we disagree with the election results our judges will over-rule their passed laws "

The far-left Maryland Legislature was a gift of Marxist Gov. O’Malley. Hogan inherited the shit and now people are going to pay for it.

The argument that a released felon can’t wait out his parole/probation period before being allowed to vote is pure unadulterated leftist/Democrat crap. All the Dems want are more lumpenproletariat, semi-educated or uneducated black voters to keep them in power, the victims of their crimes be damned and pissed on.

Maryland has no death penalty so the jails are full of psychos and other types of threats to civilization. I can think of several people my family knew who were brutally murdered in Baltimore where we lived - one strangled in his own apartment (next to my sister’s); another stabbed/strangled by a burglar - she was about 72 years old; a musician was murdered in his home; a woman was beaten to death by her “boyfriend” up the street from our family store (hopefully the information I provided a police officer friend helped to capture the killer); a young medical student was shot and killed during a street robbery about two blocks from our store; and reportedly one of my high school acquaintances was shot and killed during a street robbery, etc.

The Democrats really wrecked a once great city and now the bodies just keep piling up, thanks in part to the Democrats in the state legislative (Miller, Busch, etc). May they rot in hell!

Exactly correct. Either one is a felon (which belongs in jail) or one is a Free Citizen w/ all the INALIENABLE Rights thereof.

Same to see/read so many supposed ‘conservatives’ flout the Constitution so willingly....until it bites THEM in the @ss (as another poster pointed out).

Where the “It’s not Fascism when WE do it!” poster? /s

They fall into the law and order uber alles mindset. I understand what they are thinking but I think it is simplistic. If you did your time in jail and ended parole you should have full voting rights restored. Your debt is paid to society is it not?
