A controversial voter-turnout tactic employed by Senator Ted Cruzâs presidential campaign in Iowa is cropping up in New Hampshire, this time by way of a mysterious organization about which few public details are available.
Voters in New Hampshire received envelopes in the mail this week claiming to contain âimportant taxpayer information,â according to Christopher Crawford, who received one of the mailers and posted pictures of it on Twitter. Mr. Crawford, who recently moved to Washington, was visiting his parents at their home in Nashua, N.H., this week when he opened an envelope addressed to him only to find a chart showing the names and voting history of several of his parentsâ neighbors.
âWhat if your friends, your neighbors, and your community knew whether you voted?â the mailer says, before promising Mr. Crawford that âwe plan to mail an updated chartâ after the New Hampshire primary.
The tactic, known as âvote shaming,â is designed to encourage people to turn out to vote.

“I have a hard time believing people would be ashamed if their neighbors find out they don’t vote or they do. I just don’t see that as something people think harshly of.”
No, but you’ll piss and moan all day long if Donald Trump says $#!T!
If I get one I’m going to find the person who sent it and shove it down their slimy throat! We vote by secret ballot for a reason...this is NO ONE’s business.
I am not following your thinking here.
Cruz was responsible for it last time. Wake up.
Mine too, but it goes in the trash before I get in the house, the recycle bin.
As soon as the “shaming” stuff from Iowa was posted, the Cruzers jumped in saying it was probably a “dirty tricks” effort by the opposition.
Please explain why you say that.
Gee, I don’t know. Is there a candidate with a known history of flim-flam direct mailings?
your post is proof your harboring unbridled hatred towards Ted Cruz without an ounce of substantiated reason.
get over yourself.
No I WON’T!!!
This crap from the Cruz campaign needs to stop...this came from the Cruz campaign and we all know it!!!
They’re not in a very good mood tonight, are they? :)
Cruz is a worm and a fraud for many reasons. He’s been completely exposed for what he is. Cruz uses conservatism the way a televangelist uses the Bible. It’s a shame. I really liked Cruz at one time. Now I find him to be simply detestable.
I agree these mailings tacky. I used to be a mail carrier here in Northern Virginia and the closer it got to election day, the number of political mailings would increase and the vicious level would rise. We had the son of a crazed minister running for Sheriff a few years ago and his supporters would mail these out. He lost to the “I” incumbent.
O.K.
More recently, you indicated Cruz was behind a mailing in NH. Do you have information you can share on that?
I’ve lived Loudoun County since 1980 and have seen one from time to time. I put all the political mailers in the Round File.
Similarities and differences. The Cruz campaign was listed on the Iowa envelope. The contents in brilliant RED said “VOTER VIOLATION”. There is no such animal so it was a clear lie and intimidation. Also, the percentages listed like 55% were completely false and made up. Some who received this had not been in Iowa long enough to have such a percentage. On the New Hampshire letter shown here clearly states that your neighbors are doing this and will know in the future. Definitely “shaming.” The indications for voting history by dates of elections can certainly be provided by looking at government provided voting history information. Source of mailing is very suspicious. Hope we find out who sent, but not as bad as the Iowa mailing. Shaming, but not Legal intimidation. Possibly true not fake voting statistics/information. Await more info with interest.
Looking at your list of various types of “shaming” mailings, I would say the one that has Alaska State Voter Program is the most similar, including an official looking stamp, and actual voting information. Who was responsible for this Alaska mailing, and who do they work for/with now????
You have a problem with the most conservative candidate running for president according to EVERY conservative organization that rates them, BUT you feel the NYT is a reliable source for critiquing conservative candidates?
