Report: Vets Charity Turns Down Trump Cash
The Weekly Standard | February 8, 2015 | Jim Swift

Posted on 02/08/2016 8:43:52 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

The Daily Beast is reporting that a small New Hampshire-based veterans charity has turned down a six figure check from Donald Trump. Liberty House turned Trump's money away because they objected to it being given to them in a public setting: a campaign rally for Trump.

The Beast's Tim Mak has more:

On Friday, Liberty House executive director Keith Howard received a call from a Trump campaign staffer, who conveyed that Trump would like to publicly present them with a six-figure check at a Londonderry rally on Monday, right before the Granite State primary.

It's an enormous amount of money for a small charity. But Howard said he wouldn't do it - risking the entire, substantial donation on a point of principle.

Howard, a 57-year-old Army vet, objected to the use of veterans for political purposes. He doesn't believe that his charity - which clothes the homeless, feeds the needy, and provides housing to 10 formerly homeless vets - should be presented with money by a political candidate at a political rally.

"This is not directed at the Trump campaign," Howard said. "This is about any campaign."

Plus, Howard believed appearing at a political rally could jeopardize his group's nonprofit status - something a call to an expert in the state attorney general's office confirmed. And he found it strange that the call was coming from a Trump campaign staffer, rather than someone related to the foundation that raised money for veterans.

The money generated from Trump's Iowa rally, as the Federalist reported, went to Trump's personal foundation first instead of going directly to the charities themselves. The rally was set up by Trump as an alternative to the Iowa Fox News debate he skipped out on.

Yes, but if you look at Ted Cruz’s tax returns you see that charity toward others is not high on his list of things to do.

Check their Twitter feed @Liberty_HouseNH:

“Thank you @SNHU for raising $1,100 for the #veterans at Liberty House! We appreciate your support!”

Has a photo accepting a check... I guess it depends who is giving the money.

Disgusting that Trump is trying to tie strings on handing out the money that require the charities to appear publicly to receive it.

I'm a Trump supporter, but if this story is true, then yeah, you're right. It would have been classier had Trump just released a list of the charities, along with the money they received.

No big deal. Just give it to another charity. There is no shortage of reputable (not to imply this one isn't) veteran groups who could use a six-figure donation.

No, what disgusting is Trump using vets as props for a rally.

Many of you Cruz supporters are abject hypocrites! And we haven’t even mentioned what Ted the Pius did to Ben Carson.

Unbelievable. How many of us small donors joined in and wanted to do something positive for vets? What does this guy want? Public money handouts? The person who rejected this put pride in his political views ahead of the needs of Veterans. Disgusting.

Ummm... you DO know that you can still donate to the vets' charity, don't you? Or are your "charity" and outrage only for the benefit of The Donald, and not the vets at all? Hmmmm.

The Cruz campaign offered to write a check to Veterans groups for a MILLION dollars if they could successfully coerce Trump tobda a one on one debate with him.

As far as I know, that million dollar veterans political football check remains unsent. So, its OK when Cruz supporters do this? They don’t even follow through and hold the million hostage.

Grasping at straws. The donation is still being received by the organization, just not at the event.

I think this is a good element injected into Trump's psyche

He's already confessed to being a businessman and not a politician .... a sort'a religious guy, but not really (IMO) .... and running for President to make America great again

Trump hasn't yet, (but is learning) displayed a lot of the politically acceptable social skills the others have, so if an honorable man, content to be in God's will (MY interpretation) rejects a lot of money ... Trump will be wise to understand, thank the man and move on

It's all a social learning curve ... NOT a reflection on Trump's desire and ability to make America great again

Which ... for me ... is all I want

I don't expect trump to have whores in the oval office bathroom, nor queers in his entire social structure, nor anti-American personalities in his cabinet and there damned sure will be no muslims anywhere NEAR the controlling and determining elements of American politics.

Trump is like George Wallace in that ... with many things ... you know where he stands

As my mom used to say when I did not want something as a kid :” Good there will be more for others!”

For every 1 who does not want the donation, 100 will be there waiting.

You need the money yet you choose to cut your nose off for spite.

It’s like years ago when Rush Limbaugh wanted to help the Pediatric Aids Foundation run by super liberal Elizabeth Glaser. She said no, she did want any filthy money from conservatives.

Mr. Trump can just give that money to another Vet Charity that might want it.

Really?

TRUMP giving money, is “USING the Vets” not the ones who COULD DO GOOD FOR THE VETS, but refuse the money for political reasons?

You people really need to get a grip on your emotional hysterics.

Dislike Trump all you want, but don’t let that lead you into this sort of infantile stupidity.

Sessions appeared with Trump at a rally with Trump.
And Sessions did not endorse Trump.

The Vet Charity could have done the same. Show up. Pick up
a generous check and then leave.

Southern New Hampshire University isn't a political candidate campaigning for office.

What strings? If Trump didn’t donate the money in a transparent way, he’d be accused of pocketing it.

Bingo....we have a winner.

thanks for the insight

I agree.
The proper way to do it would be to quietly present them with the check, without the press or even staffers taking pictures.
He could then have the names of the charities listed on his website without amounts, just the charities names.

But Trump wants maximum bang for his buck regardless of the situation.
