The Daily Beast is reporting that a small New Hampshire-based veterans charity has turned down a six figure check from Donald Trump. Liberty House turned Trump's money away because they objected to it being given to them in a public setting: a campaign rally for Trump.
The Beast's Tim Mak has more:
On Friday, Liberty House executive director Keith Howard received a call from a Trump campaign staffer, who conveyed that Trump would like to publicly present them with a six-figure check at a Londonderry rally on Monday, right before the Granite State primary.
It's an enormous amount of money for a small charity. But Howard said he wouldn't do it - risking the entire, substantial donation on a point of principle.
Howard, a 57-year-old Army vet, objected to the use of veterans for political purposes. He doesn't believe that his charity - which clothes the homeless, feeds the needy, and provides housing to 10 formerly homeless vets - should be presented with money by a political candidate at a political rally.
"This is not directed at the Trump campaign," Howard said. "This is about any campaign."
Plus, Howard believed appearing at a political rally could jeopardize his group's nonprofit status - something a call to an expert in the state attorney general's office confirmed. And he found it strange that the call was coming from a Trump campaign staffer, rather than someone related to the foundation that raised money for veterans.
The money generated from Trump's Iowa rally, as the Federalist reported, went to Trump's personal foundation first instead of going directly to the charities themselves. The rally was set up by Trump as an alternative to the Iowa Fox News debate he skipped out on.
Read the whole story at the Daily Beast.
for the ignorant among you who think the Vets should allow themselves to be used as political pawns.... The Vets have honor.
Trump is a sleaze.
You think our Vets should sell their souls for money?
They would be insulted by your attitude.

“It’s not even HIS money - it was donated by others”
oh the lies,, Trump donated 1/6 of all the money raised out of his own pocket,, that’s 1 million dollars out of his personal bank account..
Trump also uses the vets for his own political gain. He takes it one step too far IMO.
Hate to say it, but Trump was accused taking the Money for his Foundation rather than the Veterans before the Rally had even ended.
Face it, people are going to look at the Fundraiser as either a positive for the Veterans or a negative for Trump.
Opinions on the subject are already set in stone, so there is no point arguing about it. No minds will be changed on either side.
Just my $.02, your Mileage may vary.
And a LOT UN-sourced!!!!
Doesn’t surprise me.
Trump is the one using the vets as a political prop, 100% and without any question. That’s why his event was done at the same time as the debate and why he is now requiring the veterans’ groups appear at his public event to receive any money. Only a total Trump shill could deny this is blatant, naked politics on Trump’s part.
As the article says, the group risks losing their tax-exempt status if they appear at a political candidate’s event. It’s something Trump might not understand given his ignorance of the nuances of how government works.
If you wish to be treated like a rational adult, try acting like one.
Try making a case for your candiate for a change instead of racing around desperate for the next infantile screed you can post at every candidate who is not your chosen one.
you are a Trump hater so what you say on this means well .. nothing
He donated $1,000,000 of his own money (or about 16% of what he raised).
Ok!
I just thought if the money could help more folks, it would be a good thing.
I have helped plenty of people, thank you very much.
No, he should not have control over it and shame on his campaign for trying to tie it to a campaign photo op
However You must not be aware that Trump personally donated $1 million to this one
and must not have ever watched his TV show to see how he charms and strong arms his contacts into donating to causes he sponsors and over the years Trump has sponsored millions and millions of donations or promotions or uses of his properties for charity
Update - rump has been made to back off - it’s money others donated for VETS in good faith - not to used for a campaign stunt -
Hoorah

This vet fells honorable about such things.
If I could be bought or rented, I’d be voting for Hillary or Trump.
I find it interesting that this Howard fellow would go running to tell his story to the Daily Beast, a well known left wing media outlet instead of trying to negotiate an alternative means for his organization to receive the donation.
“But it sounds like things have worked out. If you still believe that the man is deficient, take it up with Trump, because it appears they have made up. But maybe youâre smarter than Trump.
And if JimRob wants me gone, fine, but my tenure here, such as it is, isnât subject to review by you.”
First of all, I don’t know what this business of involving Jim Robinson came from. I never suggested that he shoud be. And FWIW, I’m glad that things have been worked out because the real issue should be getting the money to those who need it.
“If Trump really wanted to help he could have made it an anonymous donation or come to their office for a quiet presentation.”
You do know that your retirement check that you receive every month courtesy of the taxpayer is partly (actually a significant part) from people like Trump, yet you take the money, right?
A charity does it’s work with money. If they don’t need the money, then they shouldn’t ask for any money.
You are out of your mind. Get back in the hole with Trump.
“You are out of your mind”
I may well be. But you, and the vet charity leader are positively insane.
