Cam Newtonâs dream season ended with a nightmare performance.
Fresh off being named the leagueâs MVP, the Panthers fifth-year quarterback was stymied by an aggressive Denver Broncos defense in his first Super Bowl appearance on Sunday.
It didnât get any better off the field, as Newton also walked out during his postgame interview.
âI donât know what you want me to say, Iâm sorry,â a very dejected Newton said, prior to walking off. CBS Sports Radioâs Jim Rome took a shot at Newton following his postgame press conference.
âCamâs presser was weak. If youâre going to celebrate when you win, youâve got to face the music when you lose,â Rome tweeted.

I saw that and wondered if I had ever seen a football player at any level do that... Couldn’t think of any.
I’m not so sure.
A big Carolina lineman had a bead on the ball and missed.
When the ball scooted toward him, Cam got down on is hands and knees and went for it.
It’s easy to judge when looking at a slow mo of something that happened in about a second.
I am not going to judge him so harshly on that fumble...any more than I did Manning on the similar fumble that happened a few minutes before.
I watched the presser with Cam.
He said everything he should in light of the loss...
Other than invoking the obligatory: “That’s a clown-question bro.”
With the exception of the Denver fans, everybody picked Carolina to win. There’s nothing political about it.
And Manning, class guy that he is, gave credit to his D and other teammates. And was going to hug his wife and kids, say a prayer of thanks to "The Man Upstairs", and drink a lot of beer.
He’s 26,five years out of college. 26 year olds lead rifle companies in the Stan. It’s not that he’s young, it’s that since he’s 10 every person he met has told him he’s great and treated him that way. That’s what happens to kids who have athletic abilities these, days.
Cam got a huge lesson in humility last night.
He needed some Gatorade and maturity to wash it down with.
Can you put a finger on why Carolina didn’t play the way it normally plays? “Got outplayed.”
Is there a reason why? “Got outplayed, bro.”
Here he acknowledges that Denver was the better team last night. More disturbing to me is the clip up-thread where Cam doesn’t dive for the loose ball but instead gets out of the way. Reminds me of QBs who, when they throw an interception, wither fall down or run to the sidelines.
This game was all about Defense. Neither of the offenses could move the ball effectively. Manning’s job was just to preserve what the Defense did by running out the clock. The most valuable player/coach in my mind was the Denver Defensive Coach Wade Phillips.
That is true, but he did answer the media’s questions for several minutes, and without cursing or throwing things around. So while there’s room for improvement on after game interviews, he didn’t completely act like a two year old. The question now will be how he handles this latest criticism of him.
They also get a good check...last year it was like $49,000.
For losing.
For “participating”.
you’re right.
like i said, marino handle it with class and i think he was a rookie!!
I’m a Mmnning fan...not necessarily a Denver fan.
I wanted the Sheriff to win and felt they could because of their defense.
I believe Cam though he had to simply play better than Manning. And he missed the boat. He really had to play better than the Denver Defense.
IMHO, his focus was wrong and the Denver defense pretty much shut him down and sat him on his backside a whole lot more than he was used to...or thought possible.
IMHO, THAT was the difference in this game.
Manning simply did what he had to do as a good team player, and ti was enough.
Superman turned into the Incredible Sulk last night.
Jeff
A while before this play the panthers had the ball and ran left.
Nothing doing and the back reversed and went all the way to the right.
Cam was there ready to block for the back but stopped and walked away.
I thought what a chicken pooh.
Then maybe he has been told not to to avoid injury then this play?
Above: wither = either
Let's hope he calls a presser for today and does the right thing - apologizes to the impressionable youngsters.
Yep...he was the epitome of maturity and class...and team play.
Greta way for him to finish his career...and exactly what I was hoping for.
