A march by Germany's anti-Islamic organisation Pegida drew thousands to the eastern city of Dresden on Saturday on a day that saw rallies across Europe in support of the movement.
Pegida supporters took to the streets of a number of other European cities, including Prague and the northern French port of Calais, home to the infamous "Jungle" refugee camp for migrants seeking passage across the Channel to Britain.
Pegida and fellow anti-Muslim groups called the rallies following last month's signing of an agreement to create a "Fortress Europe" coalition against a backdrop of Europe's worst refugee crisis since World War II.
Several thousand Pegida supporters turned up in Dresden under clear blue skies in the early afternoon to march along the banks of the River Elbe, which flows through the city, to protest against mass immigration and the "islamisation" of Europe.
Absent was Lutz Bachmann, the movement's founder, owing to illness, organisers said.
Police, who deployed around 1,000 officers for the occasion, said Thursday they expected some 15,000 marchers to show up.
An AFP reporter said several thousand had answered the rallying call an hour after the event began at 1400 GMT.
Many held aloft banners criticising German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is in the firing line for her liberal stance towards refugees, now increasingly coming in for criticism after Germany took in more than a million migrants last year.
Around 2,000 people -- less than the 10,000 expected by police -- meanwhile joined an anti-Pegida rally at which participants urged tolerance towards migrants.
Anti-Pegida marchers chanted slogans including "no place for Nazis" and "we don't need xenophobia, demagoguery or Pegida."
Pegida supporters counter that they are "European patriots against the islamisation of the west."
On January 23rd, they issued a call for supporters to march in 14 European cities.
The Calais march brought some about 20 arrests, local authorities said, and police responded with tear gas after scuffles broke out. Another rally in the southern city of Montpellier drew barely 200 people by mid-afternoon.
In Prague, however, 5,000 people joined a rally organised by two far right groups, an AFP journalist said. Police arrested four people, a spokesperson said, without giving an estimate of the number at the demo which also attracted a counter rally.
In Dublin, scuffles broke out between people who had gathered to protest against the launch of Pegida in Ireland, and those who attended the launch of the group.
Elsewhere, in Amsterdam riot police arrested more than a dozen demonstrators both from Pegida and those opposing them in central Amsterdam. Both groups consisted of a few hundred protesters each.
he anti-Pegida group put up a large black and yellow banner saying: "Refugees welcome" while on the pro-Pegida side, protesters waved Dutch flags and banners saying: "Islamists not welcome".
Police asked Pegida supporters to board buses to leave area "for your own safety."
In Birmingham in central England, meanwhile, police said about about 150 Pegida supporters and 60 counter demonstrators turned out.
Other demonstrations took place in Warsaw, Bratislava and in Graz in southern Austria.
The police are still arresting patriots although more future anti-islam marches are being scheduled.
Maybe these folks are marching for the survival of their own culture AND not against Muslims...
If a million Americans moved to Saudi Arabia and started moving the culture, we would be called ‘ugly Americans’...
Look it up...
When do we march here?
The governments there will come down harder on their citizens than they will the invaders, er, refugees.
The hijra will continue.
When?
Hopefully before we can't anymore.
But they are marching for the survival of their culture, because of the muslims.
I’m ready.
It’s about time. Actually, long overdue.
I was about to post something similar: Anything termed "anti-" is mostly instantly tainted. To wit, the PEGIDA folks don't much care about islam, as long as it stays home. They just don't want it encroaching on *their* home. Simple and logical, really.
In Russia, police beat up Muslims & thank patriots.
Is upside down, yes?
The demonstrations need to be much, MUCH bigger than this if they want to avoid be written off as nazis and shot with water cannons and beaten by Merkel’s creepy Hijirah-enforcement squads.
The Euro-pussies could do this if they put their mind’s to it.
Will they do this? It’s so much easier to lock your doors, plug your ears and snuggle into your home...
bump
It’s astounding that all groups are allowed to advocate their own interests, except Whites and Christians. White, Christian conservatives who stand up for themselves are immediately labeled as White supremacists, racists, Neo-Nazis, etc. Even when Whites passively acquiesce to political correctness, they are nevertheless accused of such sins as “White privilege” and “microaggression” against nonwhites. Muslims and other minorities are not merely striving for acceptance, tolerance, and inclusion; they are seeking dominance, with the eventual goal of competitive exclusion of the White majority. By tacitly acknowledging and submitting to the dictates of politically correct multiculturalism, we are complicit in our own destruction and, in essence, committing national suicide. We need to stop accepting the propaganda that comes from the Left, which means that we also stop feeling guilty that we have outcompeted other groups in science, technology, cultural achievement, and the advancement of civilization generally.
Well put and 100% correct.
Have you noticed that people tend to judge others based on their own best traits?
A man who is good with money will judge others how how good they are with money.
An artist will judge others on an array of artistic talents.
A good housekeeper on how organized others are...
An honest person on how honest others are...
It's part of the human condition.
Because this is a WASP (white anglo saxon protestant) culture we set the standards. That leaves out other standards... different cultures - and hence almost by definition they ‘feel’ inferior.
On the other hand when people say, “YOU'RE NOT BEING FAIR” - we know they're in a sub-dominant position. A child says that, a teenager, a person lacking power. On the other hand, guilt trips can go too far and damage everyone... both side, all sides - which is where we're at right now. PC has run amok...the pendulum has swung too far...

What is not encouraging is the labeling of patriotic people as “anti-Islam”.
The scales tipped too far... the 'good's' in the balance. No outside influence and cultures become ingrown and stagnant... too much - they die. Merkel's and the European elites are wrong... they went too far.
