Cruz opens up about half-sister’s drug addiction, death
The Hill ^ | 2/4/16 | Mark Hensch

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) recounted his older half-sister's struggles with drug addiction and eventual death during an emotional speech Thursday.

"These tragedies are happening in human lives all over this country -- it's the human journey," the GOP presidential candidate said at Emanuel Baptist Church in Hooksett, N.H., according to CNN. "It's fraught with peril and sometimes people make decisions bound and determined to destroy themselves.

"As a family you wonder: What could I have done more? Was there a way to change the path she was on? Those are the questions you never fully answer."

Cruz was describing Miriam Cruz, one of two children from his father Rafael Cruz's first marriage. He said she resented her parents' divorce and eventually turned towards prescription painkillers.

"Every one of us who has dealt with these demons -- or who has dealt with loved ones grappling with these demons -- everyone knows that these are personal journeys," Cruz said.

"Faith and a relationship with God can be a powerful, powerful element in turning that around," he added, citing his father's own method for escaping alcohol addiction.

Cruz added that he tried intervening in his half-sister's issues but could not convince her she needed rehabilitation.

Ted Cruz using anyone or anything to win. No thanks. Why bring this up now. It is politically expedient, that is why.

Would you prefer he mock someone's physical disability before a large crowd & on camera?

Actually no, Trump is a real class act. NOT.

I laugh every time I hear his ad about the Reagan coalition coming back together. It might, but not behind him.

[How crass for a group to attack Cruz when he has a close family member die from drug use.]

The group isn’t attacking Cruz for this revelation. If you read the article, its from this past December.

Trump supporters do seem to like that kind of thing. Gives them a tingle up their leg.

“Maybe that would be something Ted Cruz could mention in his campaign, perhaps with some helpful suggestions for local action.”

Build a tall beautiful wall would be a first good step.

After that, it is a cultural thing, and it seems fighting it is a lost cause. Glamorized throughout the entertainment, sports media.

Trump’s brother died of alcoholism. That is why he doesn’t drink and never did. I also understand Trump’s children do not drink. Trump makes no issue about it. Cruz is trying though.

Trump refers often to his brother’s addiction and death. But not his cutting his baby nephew out of the will.

Are there a bunch of meth heads in NH? Christie did this tearjerker drug speech too last year.

“Trump makes no issue about it. Cruz is trying though.”

That sir is a specious statement.

Why should I pay an extra premium to cover your substance abuse problems?!

That's Socialism 101!

That's what's wrong in Washington today!

Everyone whose kids are in and out of drug rehab are pouring money down a rat hole!

There are programs that have a decades long history of success but they are voluntary and are also FREE!

Only someone who wants help will find it.

No program on this earth can give a person the desire to stop killing themselves with drug or alcohol. Period and I'm totally against forcing others to pay to my own addictions, if I had any!

You should be too, if you are a conservative, that is!

Here is Cruz pushing birthright citizenship, defending anchor babies like Rubio to be able to be president. This man is dangerous! Aug. 13, 2011. Under a minute and the same smarmy Cruz lawyereze BS. And no, he didn’t mention he was born in Canada. It took him 3 more years to figure that one out.

Society, by giving its official unction to drugs by way of legalizing marijuana to gather in tax revenue, is betraying its youth.

Ann Coulter's latest column is a gem. She wonders why politicians who are concerned about drug overdoses aren't fighting the problem at the source.

We could stop 90% of the drug trafficking and usage in this country simply by sealing our border.

I am stumped at Cruz over his adoration of his father and never a mention of his mother. Daddy first went to England, leaving Ted and his Mother alone for years, then went to the US, then back to England, then back to the US where he finally decided to become a US Citizen. Reminds me of Obama’s absent adored father.

Perhaps he brought it up because he was asked? New Hampshire’s biggest concern is drug addiction (as reported by the media, which makes it suspect), so a natural question would have been what is your experience with drug addiction. To assume that it is pandering is well, an assumption, based on your own beliefs.

Blocking my having to pay for drug addicts thru increased taxes and higher insurance rates isn’t bad optics for me. Big gov’t throwing money and regulations to solve all society’s problems doesn’t work that well.
