One person was killed and another was critically injured when a construction crane tumbled onto a Tribeca street Friday morning, officials said.
The crane fell on a row of parked cars when it toppled over on Worth St. near Church St. about 8:30 a.m. as heavy snow fell onto the city.
One person died at the scene, officials. A second person was trapped inside a vehicle and was freed by responding firefighters.

Hard to tell but it appears the crane tipped over backwards and flattened anything in at least a block, maybe more. Reports of gas leaks also.
I remember when this happened years ago and a woman was trapped underneath for quite some time.
They just couldn’t get to her.
It was a big story at the time.

WPIX reporter explained dozens complaints filed for this address. Even a complaint this morning claiming crane in operation today rather than starting Monday plus in bad weather conditions.

WPIX explained this site was inspected on February 1 and allowed to operate today . Wood was being brought down. Crane hit several buildings raining bricks down.

Look at the length of that crane! It appears to be almost a block and a half long.
It was a rental crane, although this doesn’t mean anything since I imagine most construction companies don’t have their own cranes and have to rent them. However, there apparently had been complaints about procedures at the project at this site and others run by the company (the contractor, not the rental company). They were allowed to proceed, though.
Sometimes it turns out to be corruption that gets them a pass, but sometimes it turns out to be simple negligence and haste by inspectors.
A construction worker who recorded it falling said when it is union it is always safe (just now on WABC).
If only one was killed, I’ll be amazed.

They were lowering the boom because of the high winds, as recommended by the manufacturer, they were not working.
