The question is who is the “us” he is referring to.

You are being too kind. Not necessarily “insane” by the generally accepted definition, but monomaniacal in his pursuit of totally eliminating the Western civilization as a threat to the expansion of a new world-wide Caliphate, simply the Current Occupant’s version of the “New World Order”.
By falsely claiming that Islam has been “a part of” the discovery of and the settlement of the New World, he tries to plaster a veneer of inevitability to the subversion and subjuguation of all Western civilization to Islam.
Insofar as Islam has had much to do with the development of European and American history, it is mostly because of the unrelenting pugnacity of Islam regarding the civilized world, which did much to keep the skills of defending the values of Western civilization sharpened.
But the will to continue to use those skills has fallen to a new low in recent years, and Islam, always an expansionist ideology, has simply rushed to fill the vacuum left by the retreat on a broad front by whatever is left of Western civilization, particularly Judaism and Christianity.
