I’m a pro-life atheist, love Sarah Palin, admired Jerry Falwell, and prone to say things like “Thank God for Christians in our government”.
I’m a conservative precisely because I care about the plight of my black brothers and sisters.
I’m a conservative precisely because I care about our nation’s poor.
I’m a conservative precisely because I believe America wouldn’t be “exceptional” without its foundational Christian values.
Pretty screwed up, huh?
When one falls out, go all-in for the other with tangible support vs. words.
It could lead to a classic FR flamewar, with the two constantly changing sides and still going at it hammer and tongs.
Hope they don’t kill each other in the process of determining who wins and revel in the fact that one of them likely will win.
No, and it wasn't a phaser.
Thanks for the ping.
I like them both, as well.
I’m voting for Cruz in the primary.
Whichever one wins the nomination, I’ll gladly pull the lever in November.
bump for when I can print that and hang it on the wall at home.
Can’t argue with that logic. It seems that the Republicans excel at fratricide in the primaries and have for the past several elections. The leadership at the RNC sucks.
You can say that again.
I’ve been trying to moderate the arguments away from the emotional. I think I did it in a stupid way, though. Attempting to use the same standards to judge both candidates just tends to make me get yelled at, apparently. And that makes ME emotional and then I get angry and shouty.
What I’m HOPING is that this is just mostly normal election BS and they’ll kiss and make up afterwards. Hopefully without Rubio slipping in.
My advice, and I hope you follow it better than I have, is to just try to make sure that you judge both of them honestly. and don’t get caught up in the feces flinging. Both Trump and Cruz have their good points and bad points, but I really think that the less we shit on each other, the better the election will turn out.
You have to look at a personâs past IMO.
***
But looking at the past is a real problem. Trump may have been loudmouthedly liberal in certain stances, but he’s also had some strong conservative stances since at least 1999, especially on immigration.
On the other hand, Cruz has a largely conservative record, but there are more than a few 100% establishment uniparty votes, support, and behaviors in his past (His position on Prop 187, voting for TPA cloture, the Corker bill, etc.), and they were bad enough to make me and more than a few other Trumpees knock him down from #1 to #2 or lower. Whatever the case, his past stances on immigration are about as bad as Trump’s past liberal issues; he just didn’t say them loud enough to get as much attention. But they are there.
And therein lies the problem. In my opinion, stopping the illegal flood is the only issue that matters in this election, because unless that’s solved, we lose every other fight in the long run. Some other people don’t believe that, and they are willing to take Cruz’s relative weakness on illegals if it means they get support on all the other things that they think are important.
But it’s kind of gotten to the point where any criticism of Cruz tends to be met with screams of ‘HERETIC!’ or something along those lines, and no one on Trump’s side even wants to hear anything about his past any more, even if they believe it’s true.
I quite disagree for the simple reason that Trump has a lot of support among independents. The Iowa Republicans were never big on Trump.
“Go for Trump ... Cruz canât win , Trump can ... Trump will deal with the immigration invasion properly , Cruz wonât because his backers want unlimited immigration . We welcome everyone and could definitely use your help .”
I agree with the first part of your statement, not the second.
I think that as soon as Cruz gets the nomination, he will get the Sarah Palin treatment. And not just from the MSM, but by the GOPe also.
Will he be able to withstand it?
I wonder.
Trump will get the same treatment. But from what I’ve seen so far, I think Trump could not only withstand it, he would turn it to his advantage!
Very well put!
Your point about Cruz and the crossover vote is very well taken. Thanks for thoughtfully presenting the possibility of young Bernie voters sitting out the general - I hadn’t considered that. That scenario could improve Cruz’s chances.
But I worry about the Sarah Palin treatment that any Republican candidate will get in the general. I think Trump will be able to withstand this better.
What are you thoughts on this?
I don’t think Cruz will get the nom ... but you are absolutely correct about the Palin treatment and Trump is the absolute best candidate to withstand the onslaught .. he will indeed flip the script and put the Dims on the defensive
Hmm, Cruz as a metrosexual.
That’s a new concept. I’ll look out for that.
But does a metrosexual go hunting? Does a metrosexual go hunting WITH A GUN?
I’m pretty sore the Ted Cruz actually does this, so he might be disqualified from being a metrosexual by the official metrosexual club.
Metrosexuality is a required class at Harvard Law.
Now it’s been a few years so he may have backslid a bit...
Thanks for the good advice!
