Cruz: No Action Against Staffers Who Spread False Rumor Ben Carson Was Dropping Out
Real Clear Politics ^

Posted on 02/03/2016 2:04:43 PM PST by springwater13

Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz said he will not discipline staffers who spread a rumor that Ben Carson was going to drop out of the race in an attempt to get Carson supporters to caucus for Cruz in Iowa. Cruz appeared on the Mike Gallager Show on Wednesday and talked about staffers who pushed a report that Carson wasn't going on to campaign in New Hampshire or South Carolina.

Actually, my “convoluted spin” is original with me. I would be honored if it became official “Cruz propaganda” because as I presently see it, Cruz is the best opportunity for the advancement of conservative values that has come along in a long long time.

I don’t think Cruz is “posing” as Christian— and if he is — he is doing a much better job than Donald offering/communion plate Trump.

I am glad that Cruz has a good team and they are getting things done— like winning Iowa.

Cruz won multiple cases he argued before the Supreme Court— including a case against George W. Bush regarding an illegal immigrant who murdered an American citizen. He is not a liberal or lefty lawyer. That is obvious to any serious student of Ted Cruz. I have a hard time believing you were ever on the Cruz train because you don’t seem to be trying very hard to discern the facts here:

1. The Cruz campaign never said Carson had dropped out. There is no evidence to support that contention. That removes the substance of the Carson/Trump Axis of deceit on this.

2. Rubio and Trump campaigns also relayed the CNN story. They are exempt from your faux outrage because this is all contrived and designed to provide another ad hominem basis for removing Cruz from public consideration.

3. It would be irresponsible to not report the facts of Carson’s still peculiar behavior in the aftermath of Iowa. It is increasingly clear that Carson is not serious about continuing. That is more due to the outrageous slander offered regularly by Donald Trump denouncing Carson as a deranged knife murdering pathological nut. Those are not exact words but they are quite close to the mocking critique of Carson offered by Trump. Trumpsters exulted in this kind of bombast. But now that the bombast has failed to deliver winning that will make you tired of winning, Trump wants a do-over.

Trump does not deserve a do ever. He is the true scoundrel in this race and it becomes clearer everyday. For many days, his caustic verbal assaults on conservatives were heralded. It appears he has arrived at his Waterloo.

He deserves this loss. He falsely congratulated Cruz on Monday night.

That was a lie.

He now says that Cruz is a cheater and that everyone deserves a do over in Iowa.

We have reached a point where Trump supporters have a decision to make:

Is Donald always right in what he says— no matter what?

Is he right when he says Cruz lied because he was Canadian?

Is he right when he says the CNN report about Carson means he gets a do over?

It is time to see the value and the limitations of Trump. He has encountered his limitations as he tries to reconcile his loss in Iowa.

That is what is really going one here.

After what I’ve read and heard on the radio today, nothing about the typical cruz-ite surprises me. This article explains them to a T.

Steve King @SteveKingIA Carson looks like he is out. Iowans need to know before they vote. Most will go to Cruz, I hope.

King said that it "looked like" he was out. He didn't say that Carson was out.

You were a witness to the conversation? If so, who was it between?

Carson did say that it was not him personally who disclosed the information to CNN; it was a staffer. I can’t help but wonder if it was a mistake where Carson didn’t want that information out but it got out anyway. And even if it might have been someone in the NH group that had just quit Carson’s campaign and wanted CArson’s IA supporters to be able to support a conservative who was still in the race, just like they were doing by quitting the CArson campaign and joining Cruz’s campaign.

The more I think about this, the more I think it may have been a very, very sad, mixed-up deal for everybody.

I don’t like it that Trump is trying to say that he’s the victim. I think the exit polls showed that people decided their vote at the last minute, and Trump had just put out a bunch of stuff that sounds scary to conservatives.

Thank you for your kind words. I am surprised that you would even remember me... I don’t feel that my posts could hold a candle to your previous contributions. Good luck on your new job. I can’t believe that there is any endeavor that you would not succeed at.

Thank you also for the reminder to stay calm and try not to attack other good people here. Your posts seem to always be measured and considered and not inflammatory. They are truly an example of the very best of Free Republic. I will use your example to try and tone down some of my rhetoric.

Don't worry, team Cruz wasted no time shouting it out the old school way in the venues throughout Iowa.

CNN shouted it out with tweets and on their cable TV network.

Where's is Carson's and Trump's complaint about that?

Seriously, where is it? Ever notice that Trump never seems to get mad at CNN.

Excellent points. The evidence now clearly shows that Cruz, and the other campaigns were relying on CNN’s reporting which was caused by the Carson campaigns own press release. Honestly, Cruz should never have apologized because his campaign did nothing wrong.

Doesn’t every candidate go to Florida for a few days after Iowa and not NH or SC?

In fact, I think Sanders, Clinton, Trump, Cruz and Rubio are all buying shirts in FL and laying on the beach for a few days.

What a phony issue, pushed by a phony conservative to try and damage a real conservative.

Well you are a wealth of useless trivia.

I guess the most interesting point to derive from your 2012 data is that Cruz garnered over 50,000 votes.

That is extraordinary and ought to be celebrated by conservatives.

That has nothing to do with this tempest in the Teapot regarding poor Ben Carson.

We now know that Trump lied when he congratulated Ted Cruz on Monday night. Trump is fundamentally insincere.

Rand Paul dropped out today so maybe your bitterness has been enhanced by that fact.

It is worth nothing— though your analysis offers very few clues— that unlike 2012 it appears the establishment is dead in this race. There is no Romney waiting in the wings to clear the decks. Jeb Bush is in a far more desperate spot.

I do think Trump can come back and certainly take the lead but he is behaving pathetically. He clearly did not garner a surge in the last week due to his petulance before the debate and I doubt this current bout is helping him further in NH.

If Trump is counting on great intellectual advocates like yourself . . . I like my chances.

Eckersley calls e-mail a hoax, says he’s still in the race (AUDIO)

October 29, 2010 by Brent Martin

Southwest Missouri Congressional candidate Scott Eckersley blames the campaign staff of his Republican opponent for issuing a hoax that he had suspended his campaign.

An e-mail sent to news media outlets and a “tweet” issued by a fake Twitter account announced that Eckersley had suspended his campaign due to personal reasons.

Eckersley blames his opponent, Republican Billy Long, for sending out the hoax days before the election.

“You know this is dirty politics. This is Jeff Roe-style management. That’s who Billy’s retained. That’s who he writes the big checks to,” Eckersley tells Missourinet affiliate KTTS. “This is Kansas City management doing what they do best, which is playing dirty.”

An e-mail sent through a Yahoo account claimed that Eckersley had suspended his campaign from Congress until further notice due to personal matters that had arisen over the last several days. Eckersley says it was a fake.

Q: What did the 2010 campaign in Missouri, and the Ted Cruz campaign, have in common?

A: Jeff Roe

Same dirty trick was used back then, as now. I just don’t buy that the rumor originated anywhere else but with “someone” in Cruz’s campaign staff.

I am sorry if my rhetoric has gone over the top responding to you. I have a problem reconciling Ted Cruz the Christian and Pure Conservative with some of the tactics we seem to be witnessing from the Cruz campaign recently. In my view Cruz should be held to a higher standard because of the identity he has adopted most recently

As far as Trump goes... I have plenty of reservations about him. He is however a known quantity. We have been hearing from him for decades and despite his evolving positions. It all seems to follow a known and predictable path. Maybe this familiarity gives false confidence in the direction many of us feel he would take the country? I don’t know, but especially after Sarah Palin’s endorsement I do trust him.

You write very good posts and have done a very good job of addressing this issue. Thank you for sharing your point of view. I will be carefully considering everything that you have written.

If it can be shown that anyone on his staff went beyond the otherwise reported info, he needs to hold that individual responsible. Specifically, the guy that tweeted that it was confirmed that Carson was dropping out.

And he should ensure it never happens again.

The only caveat I would add is that there appears to be an individual who “confirmed” that Carson was dropping out (using those words, or a very specific analogous set - not subject to interpretation). That individual should be checked out. How was it “confirmed”?

That individual should be in jeopardy, IMO.

Your analysis does not align with the facts as known. The only person who overstepped the CNN tweet is the individual that “confirmed” that Carson was dropping out.
