Milford, New Hampshire (CNN)Donald Trump on Tuesday said his decision to skip the last Republican debate before the Iowa caucuses may have led to his second-place finish in the Hawkeye State.

"That could've been with the debate," Trump acknowledged to reporters in Milford, New Hampshire, where he was introduced and endorsed by former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown. "I think some people were disappointed that I didn't go into the debate."

Trump made a big gamble by skipping the debate. He hoped that it would make it look as though he were negotiating from a position of strength, i.e. they need him more than he needs them. Instead, he came across as a child throwing a tantrum and picking up his toys because he doesn't like one of his playmates. It also sent a signal to many Iowa voters that he wasn't taking his own campaign seriously.

Being an obvious liberal & trying to fool people into believing you are conservative may have done it for Trump, too.

Are you referring to the Cruz campaign saying that Carson had dropped out? I doubt Carson would have gotten much more than his 8-9% one way or the other.

Cruz cheating cost Trump Iowa.

Lulz. Carson's support was within his polling margin. Trump's? Not so much.

Attending the debate might have cost him the election. It was an ambush aimed solely at taking Trump out. Megyn had to settle for attacking Cruz & Rubio.

Trump’s childish attacks and lack of a ground game probably had something to do with it also. The majority of people don’t want to hear that stuff and get turned off by it.

The debate was an ambush FOR Trump against his opponents. Fox has been promoting Trump.

Here’s my view on this....

- To the committed Trump voter it wouldn’t have made any diff.

- To the ‘undecided’ voter, they’re still trying to decide.

- The undecided voter waits.... ‘late into the process’.

- The debate missed was .... ‘late into the process’

- Trump NEEDED to be trying to SWAY to the ‘undecided’ voter that late into the process.

The Iowa caucus was Trump's to lose. Like it or not, not showing up to the debate made him look like a kid throwing a hissy fit, which was a turn-off for voters. He took a gamble with a publicity stunt and it backfired. Even Trump is saying as much.

Personally, I hope that Trump learns from his mistakes and doesn't pull foolish stunts like this before. I really don't care whether Trump or Cruz win, as long as we don't get stuck with Rubio or some other establishment-approved candidate.

If skipping the debate and instead putting together an event to honor Veterans and donate $6 million that will go to those in need cost some Iowa voters not to vote for him, I say:

Whose loss was it, really?

What he did demonstrated Trump's true character. What a certain other campaign did to win shows theirs.

He should have never attacked Megan Kelly

Instead he should have said he isn’t going to the stooge debate, and decided to something more positive with his time.

He should not have mention Megan Kelly, I cringe every time he talks about her, too much butthurt
