They’ve heard enough about Jesus in church that they get an idea that people ought to be generous. But they don’t quite see how, except through human socialist schemes.
We need to loosen the stranglehold of Caesar — the small-L libertarians have something, at least, along those lines. Even if it looks like the pot smokers are wanting to lead the parade.
Local charities (with voluntary contributions) have long been the answer in this regard. We have several good ones in my region. We’re willing to help the unfortunate, but we want control of our money and want to help those who can actually be helped. And given that government can’t help but mindlessly give out welfare, government will never be the solution.
I’ve never liked the libertarian label, given that it seems to be used almost exclusively by determined secularists, but I admire a lot of anarcho-capitalists who recognize that Rothbardian doctrine should be subservient to Scripture. Gary North in particular is a good example.
