Adele Tells Trump He Can't Use Her Songs on Campaign Trail
NBC Dallas ^ | Francesca Bacardi

Trump doesn't have legal permission to use "Rolling in the Deep" and "Skyfall" at rallies, artist says.

Donald Trump "could've had it all," but now he'll have nothing, as Adele has denied him permission to use any of her music on the campaign trail.

The real estate magnate has used "Rolling in the Deep" and "Skyfall" at various events to rev up the crowd. That will soon come to an end, a rep for the famous singer told E! News

"Adele has not given permission for her music to be used for any political campaigning," the rep said.

An Adele fan, Trump attended her Radio City Music Hall concert at the end of 2015.

rump isn't the first politician to appropriate the British singer's music for campaign use. Mike Huckabee also shared a cover of Adele's "Hello" on Twitter and YouTube, but the audio since has been muted as a result of a claim from the copyright holder. This also isn't this first time a musician has banned his or her music from political events. According to court documents obtained by E! News, Steven Tyler never granted Trump permission to feature Aerosmith's singles at rallies and other gatherings. As a result, he requested the presidential hopeful to stop playing the songs.

"Trump for President does not have our client's permission to use 'Dream On' or any of our client's other music in connection with the campaign because it gives the false impression that [Tyler] is connected with or endorses Mr. Trump's presidential bid," the cease and desist letter stated.

Days after legal papers were sent to the GOP frontrunner, the businessman spoke out on Twitter. "Even though I have the legal right to use Steven Tyler's song, he asked me not to," he shared online. "Have better one to take its place!"

Neil Young also voiced his concern after Trump used the song "Rockin' in the Free World" during his presidential candidacy announcement.

"Donald Trump was not authorized to use 'Rockin' in the Free World' in his presidential candidacy announcement. Neil Young, a Canadian citizen, is a supporter of Bernie Sanders for President of the United States of America," the 69-year-old musician's rep told E! News in a statement.

A spokesperson for Trump later clarified that the Republican hopeful paid for and obtained the legal right to use the song but wouldn't be using it again

I've never understood the law on this. As long as music is not used for commercial purposes, how can a performer prohibit someone from playing their music if the music was purchased through normal channels? Say it's my birthday or wedding and I want to play a CD of Adele's music that I purchased - can she say I can't play it if she doesn't like me?

And how is this different from a Christian baker refusing to bake a cake for an event (gay wedding) that they object to? Why can Adele do this, but a Christian baker can't?

If people buy the rights to play her music, where does she get off saying where that is? No Jewish receptions? No gay weddings?

Actually, she's quite talented.

And, if she does not like Mister Lifelong Democrat pro-choice pro socialized medicine super salesman Trump, then she's pretty smart as well.

"Funny with your handle given that Mr. Limbaugh these days is best known by only one name."

Not quite the same. Pretty much everyone knows Limbaugh's last name, but I haven't a clue what Adele's last name is, or Beyoncé's, or Lady GaGa's.

"If she gets paid royalties and a campaign has paid usage fee"

Not true. If Donald Trump wanted to record one of her songs, what you say is true.

If a movie, TV show, or advertiser wants to use her music, they have to negotiate a deal and the artist usually charges out the ying yang for that.

Back in their day, the TV show Glee performed a number of her songs. Not only did she charge them a fee, she required them to send her a copy of the performance for her approval before they could use it on the show.

She doesn't want her music used by republican politicians.

I understand but don't respect that.

Does anyone know the law on this? If I buy her CD, I can play it at home, and I can play it for a birthday party or for a wedding. But can I play it for a church event? A fund raiser of some sorts? Where is the cutting off point where you need special permission to play something?

I think for things like movies, you need special permission when the movie is shown for any kind of fundraising, but does than include public events where there is no admission charge?

IMO The most fitting song for Donald Trump would be Kate Smith’s “God Bless America.”

Generally the cut off is if you are playing it at an event where you are gaining something of value.

So you can play it at a birthday party you throw for a friend but can't play it at a party you were paid to organize.

Using it to promote something or someone is also where you have to pay.

Church event yes, fund raiser no.

Don't see the word Republican in there.

She has no say as long as Trump pays royalties to ASCAP or BMI.

The left-wing entertainment cartel- denying Republican candidates the use of popular music for some strange reason.

Funny with your handle given that Mr. Limbaugh these days is best known by only one name.

Not a great comparison. Most everyone knows Rush's last name. I couldn't tell you Adele's last name if my life depended on it.

True, but not live events.
