Obama bucks history, directs Pentagon to make guns safer, not more lethal
The Washington Times ^ | January 31, 2016 | Rowan Scarborough

Wartime U.S. presidents have taken keen personal interest in picking the most lethal gun for the military.

But in President Obama's first foray into small-arms procurement for the armed forces, his Jan. 4 executive order on gun control directs the Pentagon to find ways to make not so much more lethal firearms, but safer ones.

His direct order has brought a few snickers among retired combatants who argue that the commander in chief is issuing his directive at a time of more pressing small-arms priorities. The military, critics say, fields a flawed personal rifle and has spent more than a decade selecting a new off-the-shelf pistol, with no winner yet.

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Robert Scales, an artillery officer in Vietnam who is steeped in military history, says at least three former presidents immersed themselves in ballistics -- for reasons other than safety.

Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War commander in chief, tested emerging "repeater" rifles in the White House "back yard" and championed the Spencer model.

Theodore Roosevelt, the combat-hardened Rough Rider, ordered development of the Springfield rifle.

John F. Kennedy, considered a founding father of the Green Berets, pushed the Army to give up the M14 for the new AR-15, which became the venerable M16. Kennedy envisioned the automatic rifle as the perfect counterinsurgency weapon in South Vietnam.

Yes, and that was when the three round burst was implemented.

I’m sure of this, and no three round burst M16 was ever carried in Vietnam. I was in the Army, Germany not Vietnam, ‘74-’77 and our M16 was a select fire weapon and there was never any mention of a three round burst feature ever in any of our training.

Methinks someone was a Woodstock and in Vietnam at the same time one was hanging off The Who’s helicopter.

Ya wanna scare ISIS? Instead of flamethrowers we need bacon grease throwers.

That would be lard.
Those two choices are not mutually exclusive.

Flamethrowers don't care what flammable liquid fuels them.

It bears serious consideration, whether "international law or agreements" prohibits its use or not.

I'm sure international rules of war prohibit children suicide bombers, execution by burning in cages, or by drowning, or by sawing helpless prisoner's heads off with a dull knife.

Think of the hog farm subsidies!

Given two countries in the world, who has Oboma supported?

The muslim one.

In green-on-green conflicts, the most radical muslim one.

In conflicts not involving muslims, he can't be bothered to support either side.

There are no exceptions.

It’s very easy to make a safe firearm.(1)design it so it has no firing pin.(2)Mandate that any future firearms cannot have a bored barrel.

Now that’s a safe weapon.

Spike bayonets were pretty common when the ‘03 Springfield came out. The blade bayonet, aside from utility as a knife, served as a short sword in a pinch. (They used pretty long ones in those days).

One heck of a lot of SKS rifles came with a spike bayonet. The 91-30 Nagants did, too.

Excellent point and there’s no doubt 0bama has motives like that and is starting with the military getting the gun grabbers foot in the door.
