Danon: I experience anti-Semitism daily in the UN

srael's United Nations (UN) Ambassador Danny Danon participated Sunday evening at the "Modern Anti-Semitism: BDS" conference, hosted by the Department for Combating Anti-Semitism of the World Zionist Organization (WZO).

Danon spoke to the dozens of attendees at the Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem, revealing to them that "unfortunately I experienced anti-Semitism and BDS every day, every hour.”

"My family and I represent Israel at the United Nations in New York, a strong Jewish city. We cross one street to the UN building and it is a different world."

Danon said that ''it is a source of great pride to represent the State of Israel, but anti-Semitism and BDS are highly represented there too."

The ambassador added that numbers do not lie and in 2015, the General Assembly passed 22 resolutions against Israel.

"One resolution was passed against Iran, one against North Korea, and Syria - zero resolutions, even though there are 250,000 dead there....

Sorry to bust Dannon's bubble, but in my years in NYC, I encountered anti-Semitic harassment frequently, though not daily, on the subways and streets. The UN is bound to be worse, although without the regular threats of violence, both implicit and sometimes explicit that I encountered.

New York, for all intents and purposes, is a Jewish city! I think it's one of the largest Jewish populations outside Israel with many Orthodox and Hasidim walking around unharmed. While I don't deny it's possible to be on the receiving end of anti-Semitism, it is quite unlikely to be a frequent part of daily life here. All my friends are Jewish and they would scratch their heads at your comment. I'm half Jewish on one side of my family and I've rarely heard any anti-Semitic comments.

If you are Orthodox, you are likely to experience more trouble than if you are not because all the bigoted idiots can identify you as Jewish.

However, no Jewish person should be harassed in the US, anywhere and we should really raise you know what over it. Muslims are a great source of and inspiration for hating Jews in the US and Europe, now that they are present in great numbers and hugely activist. : (

Well, if you want to give it the acid test, try traveling the A train from Fulton Street to Far Rockaway late at night, or walking down Utica Avenue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn or Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway any old time. If you stay in a safe zone, you probably won’t encounter much anti-Semitism, but it’s there big and bold once you cross over to the wrong side of the street.

I assume you’re talking about blacks encountering Jews who identify as Jews by wearing a kippah or tallits, etc.? Yes, that may be true. I’m thinking of everyday life in what you refer to as a safe zone - most of NYC. As a woman, I don’t like being in bad neighborhoods or the trains late at night myself - we’re all vulnerable.

Basically, yes. As a man earning a living and living outside of the safe zones, I had no choice but to commute late at night and walk through black neighborhoods with a kipa. The whole of NYC is far from a safe zone. Upper East Side and 13th Avenue in Borough Park, or the like, sure. But those de facto sheltered safe zones are narrow, and the contrast is stark.

Oh, come on. Midtown? Gramercy Park? Murray Hill? Times Square? Upper West Side? Lincoln Center? The Diamond District? Greenwich Village, Lower East Side home of Russ & Daughters? The Jewish section of Williamsburg?

I’m sorry you had trouble in any neighborhood but much of NY is a safe zone for Jews.

Like you said. Much of it can be deemed safe, within the narrow confines of heavily Jewish and/or heavily well-to-do neighborhoods. Most of it? Hell, no.

Totally disagree. And I’m sorry you live abroad where you can tell everyone you know how horrible NYC is. It’s not.

WE have very different experiences, having lived very different lifestyles. I don’t doubt that your experience is authentic. As you aid, you don’t like going into bad neighborhoods or riding the trains late at night. Neither did I, but it was a fact of my life then that I had to, and that was my experience.
