An electronic cigarette exploded in a 15-year-old Windsor boy’s mouth, causing him to lose about a half-dozen teeth, police and fire officials said.

The explosion sent hot shards of the device scattering, with some still hot like embers on the floor when firefighters arrived after a 911 call came in just after 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at a home on Summer Rain Drive off Los Amigos Road, said Cyndi Foreman, a fire prevention specialist with the Central Fire Authority of Sonoma County.

“His teeth literally fell out with braces on them,” Foreman said. “He had lacerations to his lip and tongue. It literally exploded in his mouth.”

The boy was taken to Kaiser Medical Center in Santa Rosa and released with a referral to an oral surgeon, Foreman said. The boy told paramedics that the so-called “vape pen” had been modified, Foreman said. She did not have details about how it had been modified.

“If parents know their kids are using e-cigs, they should consider the explosion risk and the risk of having them develop a smoking habit,” Spallino said.

Plus, parents should be aware that the devices can be used to ingest concentrated marijuana, he said.”

For one, why was said Darwin runner-up ‘home’ @ 1PM (did I miss it’s not a school day?)?

Lastly, as per the story, isn’t it illegal for those under 18 to smoke, vape, etc.? Let alone parent(s) ALLOWING to begin...Same with their 2nd part (MJ). Geez.

Try as I might I cannot figure out a way to use my vape pen to consume cannabis.

My vape pen is designed to utilize liquid and pot is, well, pot.

My vape pen uses an 18650 battery and gets super hot in just a few seconds. It is an older model without any safety features

Try as I might I cannot figure out a way to use my vape pen to consume cannabis...

Ask any local teen how this is done.

One first extracts the active ingredient from the pot, which is a liquid. Put the liquid in the vape pen.

The extraction step can be dangerous. Frequently very flammable solvents are used.

Many lithium cells for critical applications have safety measures built in to prevent a runaway heat excursion. Aftermarket cells or heating coils substituted to gain more amperage in E-Cig are cited for such accidents.

Or you can simply buy the cannabis oil.

True. Not too many kids understand circuits or how to safely modify an electrical circuit. That and they have the immortality attitude, and have no idea just how dangerous tinkering with lithium batteries are. Even with my background I am extremely respectful of that.

You make it sound so easy. have had a different experience. The only method of extraction I am familiar with is the CO2 / dry ice method. The result is kief. It is not a liquid.

“Most likely whatever they did shorted out the lithium battery and it exploded.”

Agree, shorting or making the battery discharge faster would do it.
