An Iowa win might make the Trump train unstoppable

Ted Cruz and Donald Trump do agree on one thing--if Trump wins Iowa, he might be unstoppable on his way to winning the Republican presidential nomination.

And they are not alone.

A wide range of senior Republicans told POLITICO that if Trump wins Iowa, he'll more than likely be the nominee. One factor they repeatedly pointed to: An Iowa victory over Cruz would validate opinion polls showing him in command of the race. The Trump phenomenon would officially become a reality.

Mike McSherry, a longtime campaign consultant and former executive director of the Republican Governors' Association, said: "If Trump wins Iowa, I don't know how you'd stop him. All these guys are going to be chewing each other's throats out for second place."

A top official of a rival GOP campaign, speaking anonymously to avoid offending his candidate, said: "If Donald Trump wins Iowa, I think he has won--period. Ted Cruz is supposed to win Iowa. If Trump wins, he'll be on a trajectory to come out of the SEC primaries [March 1] with close to triple the delegates of anyone else."

One of the nation's best-known Republican strategists, speaking on condition of anonymity because of his close connections to the leaders of several of the campaigns, said: "Only Trump can stop himself. All his opponents can do is cause him to do things that make him less appealing."

For weeks, Trump has been telling his crowds here that he thinks a win in the Feb. 1 caucuses would enable him to "run the table."

Please, Laz. Cruz is hardly what I’d call establishment.

Cruz is not establishment. But by preferring a Dem win if you cannot get YOUR preferred candidate, then YOU are acting exactly like the Establishment.

Four more years of increasing Dem demographics will make it impossible to elect any candidate you find acceptable in 2020. Face reality.

For me, I'll take either Cruz or Trump over any Dem.

Putting together that Veteran’s event says he has a substantial organization and resources AND knowhow.

That was my impression. Not only does he have a substantial organization but he has had it for a long time and they are very disciplined.

The measure of a competent senior executive is his ability to find, hire, and delegate to competent people.

Trump has had decades of being a senior executive.

Laz, you’re missing the point. I swallowed hard and made the concession in the past *and we lost!*

I see Trump as the loser right now based on current head-to-heads. So, I’m not going to be suckered again.

People should rally around a conservative that is showing the ability to win head-to-head. Failing that, and Trump wins the nomination, I won’t be suckered into being Romneyed or McCained with my vote again. I will, with good conscience, write in Cruz instead of throwing my vote away on someone for whom I did not vote on in good conscience and will lose anyway.

What will you do in November if

1) Trump won the nomination, and

2) Trump is ahead in the polls against the Dem?

Well, then he doesn’t need my vote.

I’m voting my conscience from here out. If I was only picking a candidate based on whether they could win, regardless of the principles upon which they stood, then, by that logic, I should be voting for Hillary if she’s ahead in the polls.

Trump’s windsock values don’t represent me, or anyone else in my circle. I won’t be voting for the Hillary of the GOP.

Sounds like a threat.

I think Trump will attract Plenty of cross-over Democrats that don’t like what Obama has done and a lot of independents who left the liberal Republican party, myself included.

That will more than make up for those of you stomping your feet because your perfect candidate (with a multitude of flaws) didn’t win.

Probably because he thought the journalist would be a gentleman and not betray a confidence, which was basically a joke meant to be kept between the two.

I, you, anyone, probably would dread having his or her personal correspondence, years old and totally out of context, broadcast like this.

Trump thought wrong, the journalist was not a gentleman but was a cowardly cad who betrayed the confidence and private correspondence of a gentleman. In fact, he did more. He broadcast it in way designed to harm Trump. So the journalist (I repeat myself here... they are all cowardly cads) is a cad AND a snake.

You wonder why men are beaten down and wussified nowadays? You wonder why decent people don't want to run for public office and try to fix the country? Look in the mirror.

It is because metrosexuals like you and the journalist can't take a joke like men without it messing with your makeup and hairdo. Then running around trying to destroy the person who told the joke. You and the journalist are why we get Odungo for eight years. Maybe Hillary too.

Good insight.

But, pearls before swine and all that, as your point isn’t being heard.

What are you expecting that Cruz will do, which you have no faith that Trump will do?

FR is a VERY poor reflection of the country. I wish that was not so, but it sounds like you are in a bubble.

Trump will attract Dems...

I wonder why. Maybe because he’s a Dem in conservative clothing?

That’s how I view him. You can call that “stomping my feet,” but I’m through with supporting candidates like Romney or McCain that don’t really represent me. The people in my circle all agree, and without me prompting them. So, I guess we’re all throwing a temper tantrum in your book, but bear in mind that Trump will be losing more votes than he picks up from crossover dems - that’s why he loses in head-to-heads against Hillary.

Uh, yeah, right. It’s not like they were drinking buddies or anything. Trump called someone he didn’t know and acted like a complete jackass. If he called me randomly and said something equally ludicrous, would I somehow be expected to keep that as a personal correspondence? Give me a freakin’ break.

If you say stupid things to strangers there is no expectation of privacy.

You have drunk so much koolaid that you believe the journalist was the guy who wasn’t the gentleman in this case! Tell me - is it grape or cherry favored?

I have more doubts about Cruz since he doesn’t know if he’s for legal status, teddy bears, or helping Americans.

He had his chance in the beginning of the primary to make a statement, let us know where he stood. He was ...silent. Deafeningly so. He only came out with a plan when forced, months after all the others had. And he saw what was popular.

That’s why I switched. He didn’t seem trustworthy on my #1 issue. That mantle of being a perfect conservative seemed false and contrived.

OTOH - You sound like you have given up - there’s a long way to go yet. I think we all want the same thing but have differing ideas on who can get us there.

Be more faithful in sticking to conservative principles (Trump’s vacillations over time make Cruz look like Peter the Rock).

Govern in a Constitutional manner. (Trump continually makes comments indicating he believes the presidency has powers it does not.)

Make FEWER deals. I don’t want deals. For example, I want the government shut down if the dems won’t cave on the budget. But forget closing national parks - a president Cruz would shut down the agencies that would hurt the democrats the most.

No touchback amnesty.

Cruz has already outlined several federal agencies he would work to shut down.

etc, etc, etc.

This isn’t very hard. Trump will do what is best for Trump, conservatives be damned.

We’ll see. You’ll be eating Trump brand crow steaks when that buffoon betrays conservatives left and right.

But I won’t be voting for him to help that. That’ll be on you.
