ANALYSIS: Debate Without Trump Favors Trump
abcnews.com ^ | January 28

Posted on 01/28/2016 9:03:41 PM PST by Helicondelta

It turns out that a world without Donald Trump is filled with Donald Trump anyway.

To many in the Republican Party, Thursday night's debate was a dream scenario -- seven candidates, and not a reality TV show billionaire in sight. No huge walls were hypothetically built, and no religious groups were banned from entry into the United States.

Yet Trump was still everywhere. He was there for viewers on another channel, giant American flag behind him, two other Republican candidates beside him, chants of "USA, USA, USA" enveloping them.

He was also there with the candidates as the "elephant not in the room," as moderator Megyn Kelly put it, or as Jeb Bush's non-showing "little teddy bear."

His absence was felt, moreover, when the leading candidates tangled over the hot-button issue of immigration. Trump wasn't there to take heat for them, or to face any real scrutiny of his own.

Trump's dominance in the race was revealed by the extent to which the debate lacked an obvious center of gravity. The party and its candidates have grown used to the front-runner; surely the same is true for viewers treated to a debate season like no other.

They all looked like wimps up there.

I think it’s clear. NO MORE DEBATES unless they’re done his way.

Hillary, when she’s ahead, avoids them. Now she’s behind, she wants them.

I wish we had some behind the scenes information on what’s going on over there at Fox...

I turned on some reruns of the debate when I got into my room. The analysis was non stop and into the wee hours of this morning...

I listened to Kelly Megyn drilling Rubio on amnesty. She makes me sick. Had to turn it off. I’m sure Trump was relieved not having to look at her tough face.

Rush had trouble believing that Trump would go through with the boycott. So did others.

Funny thing — Art of the Deal — be willing to walk from the table.

I’m glad he did. There was a solid debate last night, free of name-calling and distractions.

‘I wish we had some behind the scenes information on what’s going on over there at Fox...’

Rush said that things were going on.

Hannity invited two of Trump’s sons to talk about the boycott.

O’Reilly begged Trump to not boycott the debate even though he promised not to bring it up.

It was a high level of panic and manuevering.

Rush also pointed out [apologetically] that he was friends with Megyn and Ailes. Hannity made a point that he felt grateful for his chance to be on TV. Almost like tapping ‘SOS’ while serving the Kremlin.

In truth ... they were setting him up to have a run-in with two sabateurs [sanctioned by the RNC BTW ...]

[quote]

The second individual, Dulce Candy, is an immigrant from Mexico, a former U.S. military servicewoman, and a Latina. Trump’s commitment to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico could very well be a topic of her discussions with the candidates.

The third individual, Nabela Noor, is a Muslim American who is an outspoken critic of anyone who, like Trump, questions the motivations of Muslims, Muslim immigrants, Islam, and jihad. Noor, who reportedly equated Trump with Adolf Hitler, will most likely address Muslim-related issues with the candidates. Quite possibly, Noor will question Trump’s plan to temporarily close U.S. immigration to Muslims. Noor states she uses her voice to combat what she perceives as negative stereotypes of Muslims, a phenomena she states is more prevalent.

Did Cruz come off strong on immigration and how to prevent muslim immigrants from invading?

Based on what I’m reading ...

If Cruz had joined the boycott, he would be a titan this morning standing next to Trump. Both would still be rivals, but every other candidate today would be a punier midget than ever.

-- Rush had trouble believing that Trump would go through with the boycott. So did others. --

I think Limbaugh ws just being his usual coy self. The moment Trump commited to no-show, in writing, it was carved in stone.

-- Funny thing -- Art of the Deal -- be willing to walk from the table. --

Yes. And be willing to come back when the terms change. The terms didn;t change, and Trump had committed resources to the veterans rally appearance, and had to follow through with that. One debate is not.that.important. Not near as important as his credibility in commitment.

“The man is a junior senator, and yet his arrogant condescension towards others knows no boundaries.”

That’s how he came across to me too.

Paul nailed it also.

“He won the hearts of many, many Dems and Independents tonight.”

Especially with CNN and MSNBC appearing very pro-Trump thru out the evening.

My hubby just said he wouldn’t be surprised if Trump planned this all along to get cross-over voters.

That’s actually from Trump. At the Tulsa rally, and I suppose other rallies as well, he said something like this: “We’re going to win in health care. We’re going to win militarily. We’re going to win so much you’ll say ‘Please Mr. Trump, can we not win this one. We’re so tired of winning.’ And I’ll say ‘No.’”
