You may not trust the author, but those were quotes. That means the article was sourced.

Quotes without attribution are meaningless. Here, hold my beer and watch this:

"map beats his wife" so said an unnamed source with intimate knowledge of his marriage, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Since I'm the author, citing an unnamed / unattributed source and I'm quoting someone, that's true isn't it?

Of course it's not.

The quotes in the LA Times article are direct and attributed. Read the article and see for yourself.

Your example is correct but doesn't apply in this case. You either didn't read or didn't understand the article. Try it again.
