Gov. Walker still gives edge to Cruz in Iowa
WKOW - Madison, Wis ^ | January 25, 2016 | Greg Neumann

FENNIMORE (WKOW) -- Despite polls showing billionaire businessman Donald Trump leading the Republican presidential race in Iowa, Gov. Scott Walker (R-Wisconsin) feels Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has an edge in the Hawkeye State.

Iowa voters will caucus next Monday night in a race seen as pivotal to Sen. Cruz's chances for the GOP nomination.

In past month, Trump has gone from trailing Sen. Cruz to leading him by six points in an average of recent polls.

But Gov. Walker agrees with many experts who believe Cruz still has an advantage, because of the ground game he's set up in Iowa to make sure his supporters all get out to caucus.

Many believe Trump supporters are less committed to turn out.

Governor Walker, who advised others to follow his lead last September and get out of the race so that Trump could be defeated, still doesn't believe the reality TV star is a lock in Iowa or for the Republican nomination.

"I don't necessarily think the person in the lead represents the majority of the voters," Gov. Walker told 27 News Tuesday. "He may represent a plurality of a big field, but I think things will probably change if the field narrows."

But Gov. Walker said he isn't surprised there has been push back against Cruz from Gov. Terry Branstad (R-Iowa), since Cruz has called for an end to the Renewable Fuel Standard.

The RFS is a federal policy that mandates all gas sold in the U.S. include a certain percentage of biofuels like ethanol.

Ethanol is made with corn, and its production brings in millions to the Iowa economy.

Gov. Walker said he got similar push back for mentioning a plan to phase out that mandate, but feels Cruz is in the right on the issue.

“EVERYONE” hates him...

Wow, do you think Nate Silver - FiveThirtyEight.com - put that into his calculations.

That is like a “negative” endorsement.

Thank you for condensing the Mother Jones piece for the thread.

You might want to study this carefully, because in all likelihood this is what is about to happen in Iowa:

IOW, Trump has his 30% or so who would support him even if he shot people in the middle of the street, but the vast majority of Republicans who do NOT want Trump are split among all the remaining candidates. When the herd thins, where will those people gravitate toward? Probably not Trump.

The National Guard never went out and ordered vaccinations, so all is good. Perry never pursued it.

But doctors offer it to parents.

Yeah, right. They’re committed enough to stand in line in sub-freezing weather to pack stadium-sized venues to hear him speak, they’re motivated to caucus for the first time ever, but they’re not actually going to show up?

You know, Cruz’s initial planning (”Can He Win” powerpoint deck) completely overlooked Trump as a threat, his whole focus was against Jeb and Rubio. So having a “ground game” might have been more relevant had the Trump quantum shift not occurred.

junk poll conducted by students over 3-week period: Jan. 5-22, making it nearly meaningless.

Here’s a set of professional polls that are a bit more meaningful:

“The herd needs to thin,”

You’re darn right it does!

Otherwise they’re giving a helping hand to Trump.

If voters don’t want Trump, they should read the tea leaves and put their support behind Cruz now.

Harvard Law School classmates

Fighting words: “A pompous asshole.”

The beef: GQ reported that Cruz started a study group during his first year in Cambridge, but he announced that “he didn’t want anybody from ‘minor Ivies’ like Penn or Brown.” In an interview with the Boston Globe, another student recalled what happened when she agreed to carpool with Cruz: “We hadn’t left Manhattan before he asked my IQ.”

Walker is a courageous governor. I admire and respect him. However, he was a big bust as a presidential candidate and doesn’t need to audition as a political pundit.

Which makes all of those who “think” (SIC) that way, whistling past the graveyard deniers of the truth.

It’s natural that news outlets (especially one in Madison, WI) would ask Scott Walker his opinion - especially since he’s so hated by unions, academe and other assorted Leftist groups.

And we should take his opinion for what it’s worth, and with a grain of salt.

That’s right. Trump’s voters are only about 89% committed and stand in lines in the snow 3 or 4 hours.

Walker and Cruz! Together again! Now Donald Trump is definitely done! Going to a fun rally where you spend four-five hours to hear a 50 minute speech is so much easier than going to an hour long caucus. None of those Trump rallyers will bother to caucus.
