Trump the Bully Hits a Wall
Politico Magazine ^ | 1/15/16 | Jack Shafer

Posted on 01/17/2016 7:04:11 AM PST by libbylu

It's worked on one opponent after another. Here's why he's met his match with Cruz. s every verbal bully can tell you, simply slathering your adversary with insult is never enough to drive him publicly, humiliatingly into the ditch. If you’re going to wound, the insults have to contain some truth—often just a seed of truth, enough to nurture injury bitter fruit. So in calling Jeb Bush low energy again and again and again and again, Donald Trump is not dishing a random taunt at his opponent.

This is my main problem with this whole race - the ad hominems. I like a lot of what Trump says, but think Cruz is the more authentic conservative.

Granted, even the founders did their share of mud-slinging back in the day.

But, rhetoric aside, which candidate is more likely to listen to voters, when push comes to shove?

I love the “all of his ex-wives” line. There’s something so comically absurd about it. Do I give two shits about how many wives he’s had? Not really. I’m not quite sure, though, that i’d be holding it out as the measure of a man.

If I were one of his conservative supporters, I would be more concerned about his NY values that he spoke of in 1999, when he ran for president as an independent liberal in the vein of Mike Bloomberg. His enthusiastic support for partial birth abortion would really give me pause, as would the hundreds of thousands of dollars he’s given to pro-population control groups like the Clinton Foundation.

Trump needs to run an ad in Iowa saying “I don’t have NY values. I have American values and it will take someone with American values to make her great again.”

"I actually think he’s (Trump) a very nice man."

He's so nice he has even heaped praise on Pelosi, the Clinton's, Bloomberg, DeBlasio... Heck, He's even donated "between $100-$250K to the Clinton massage parlor and "charitable" foundation. He's just nice

Trump has built an empire doing what he said he was going to do and is generally very admired for all of his accomplishments. It is just flat out irrational that as he gets into his latter years, his goal is to become one of history’s biggest pariah’s by lying to the American people and acting in a manner different than he says he would once he gets into office.

Exactly! He even writes in the Art of the Deal that if you don't deliver what you've promised people will always find out. He got where he is by delivering what he promises.

Over his career Trump has employed thousands and thousands of people. Where are all the stories about what a horrible person he is/was to work for? Has anyone looked?

You know the lib left would latch on to any such reports like a hungry dog on a meaty bone. Seems they can't find anything negative, at all, nothing, zilch.

Boo-hoo!

I was actually there. Ted Cruz never used the name Trump. He got standing ovations. Donald Trump talked mostly about what he’s done in business until he began attacking Bush and Cruz. He was continually booed as he attacked Cruz. He got no standing ovations other than when he took the stage. Just the facts.

Since this was written, Trump has been blistering Cruz. Lots of talk about Goldman Sachs, Citibank, concealing loan records, wife’s employment with Goldman Sachs and even calls Cruz a “Nasty Person” that nobody likes. Says he has an “Edge” about him. It is going to to get real dirty between now and Feb 1.

All politicians are posers...posing as experts that know better than you. Trump is actually less poser than the rest of them. I like Cruz and would love to see him on the Court but he seems like one of the biggest posers of all of them. Him and Carly, yuck.

Good beats bad any fair day, and Cruz went needlessly negative.

A Christian, especially, should know that grace gets things going. It doesn’t take a lot to come up with a statement that isn’t sarcastic, but is hopeful, that could even outclass Trump’s generalized approach. Cruz could have lamented how the older values of New York, which still showed on 9/11 and that he salutes, have been more and more encrusted with paralyzing leftism and this needs to change to keep New York from going the way of Detroit, and that a more free vision of America will promote this.

We’ve spent time at/around Trump properties and employees. Their work ethic and enthusiasm for their jobs, is on a high level not seen much, anymore.

You can tell they love their work and they TELL YOU they love working for Trump (and they love Trump). It’s truly refreshing to see this. Regardless of the employee’s position - it’s across the board.

You know, this is a good point. If he was only covering bases to curry favor with the local politicians, how come he’s never given money personally to Cristie? As governor of NJ he’d have substantial authority over Trumps “empire” in Atlantic City. Say what you will about him, but if Trump really believes what he says he does, his beliefs certainly align much more with Cristie than with Cuomo, DiBlasio, or Clinton.

Uh oh. Cruz is in Trump’s dog house now.

But I see something coming, maybe.

Donald is going to ask Ted if he will be Donald’s pit bull. Donald isn’t opposed to edge. Donald knows the edge needs to be turned in the direction of doing good.

And Trump can come out and say he trusted the Democrats and they just broke his heart to smithereens and that’s why he’s stepped up as the un-politician.
