Giuliani: Cruz owes New York an apology
The Hill ^ | January 15, 2016 | Rebecca Savransky

Rudy Giuliani on Friday said Ted Cruz should apologize to New York City for attacking its "values" in the presidential race.

"After all we have been through as a city and as one undivided nation, to have a United States senator running for President paint New York as a city consumed with greed, sin and media obsession is shocking," Giuiani, who has not made an endorsement in the 2016 race, wrote in the New York Daily News.

"Sen. Ted Cruz should apologize to the people of New York for his remarks and to the people of the United States for his crass attempt to divide us."

Giuliani, a former mayor of New York City who made an unsuccessful run for the White House in 2008, joins a growing list of figures pushing back against the Texas senator.

Cruz this week said Republican voters should reject Donald Trump and the "New York values" he embodies, such as support for abortion rights and same-sex marriage.

Even Hillary Clinton backed Trump on Friday, tweeting that "New Yorkers value hard work, diversity, tolerance, resilience, and building better lives for our families."

A spokeswoman for the senator defended the statement on Friday, saying the country must not become like liberal Manhattan.

Trump rebuked Cruz for the attack during the GOP debate on Thursday while recalling how his home city responded to the 9/11 attacks.

"When the World Trade Center came down, I saw something that no place on Earth could have handled more beautifully, more humanely than New York," Trump said.

Giuliani, who was mayor at the time of the attacks, said New York should be proud of Trump, who delivered a "strong, truthful and eloquent defense of our great city and nation."

Except his law enforcement values, Giuliani is an embodiment of New York values, isn't he?

Giuliani’s 15 minutes of fame is up.

He’s a NY liberal, no matter how you slice it.

Cruz owes no one an apology. No one should apologize for telling the truth. If these N’Yawkers are offended by the truth, too bad.

Sorry but Cruz is 100 percent wrong on this. And even most agree on FR. Cruz stepped in it and needs to own it. It isn’t hard to do. I am sorry.......I had to teach my 2 year olds how to do it and they didn’t like it at all. But that is what you do. His parents being divorced really screwed him up.

Giuliani epitomized the kind of big-government police state crap that destroys any credibility he has in terms of "conservative" -- or even American -- values. Ted Cruz would have gotten a lot more mileage out of his comment if he had simply referred to "Rudy Giuliani values" instead of "New York values."

Giuliani's abysmal performance on the national scene when he forayed into presidential politics tells me that Cruz's comment will really resonate with most conservative voters.

I wonder why most of them left NY?

When I did, I ended up in NJ. Cruz is 100% right about NYC/Trump’s values. I joined Free Republic almost 12 years ago because it was a conservative site. I hope to be able to vote for a conservative for the first time (was previously apolitical) & the most conservative candidate in this race is Ted Cruz...
